I recently acquired a Barefaced SuperMini (1x12, 8 ohm, rated for 600W). My only amp at the moment is an Elf, which will put out 130W into 8 ohms. I've not had a chance to use this combination in anger yet, though we have a band rehearsal next weekend when I can give it some welly. The band is pretty loud, and up till now I've been using the Elf with a (Mesa? 4x10?? 4x12??) cab that is in the rehearsal room we use, and it's been plenty loud enough, though I've no idea what the ohmage of that cab is. I've also read that some cabs don't give their best sound when "underpowered" - no idea if this is true or a myth. Any thoughts on whether/how this combination is likely to work out? I should add that I am playing keys in this band, but am looking to join a second band as a bass player, and want the setup to work for either scenario. I know, I know, the sensible answer is wait to try it out and see, but am curious as to your opinions.

Have successfully gigged with Elf plus Barefaced One10 before so IMO you will be fine.

EDIT That’s given your speaker is larger/more capable, if that makes sense!

I think, impedance-wise a 4 x anything is usually wired to give you 8Ω//8Ω = 4Ω in series with another 8Ω//8Ω = 4Ω to give you a final 8Ω load.  So the Elf will be supplying the same sort of power into your 8Ω rehearsal room speaker as it will into your 8Ω Super Mini.

I have a Super Mini T and they are really very efficient, so I'm guessing that your gigging volume will be louder than the rehearsal room volume.  But you probably won't get the same low end on the Super Mini as your 4 x whatever cabinet.  So you might end up screwing more EQ into the Elf, which might in turn mean you get less overall volume.

I've also heard that some cabs don't sound sweet when underpowered, but that's certainly not true of any of the newer generation of Barefaced cabs.  The sound is very consistent across all volumes until you start to reach the limits of the speaker (which you certainly won't be doing.)
