Dudgeman Posted April 15 Posted April 15 Sat night we threw in Beat it (fall out boy version) played onec in soundcheck and then live..went down a storm... Both guitarists run Digitech drop pedals .once the crowd had stopped going nuts we launched into hallowed be they name ( our closer) So ..guitarist one starts, I play my low E, drummer triggers the bell.... I look at the drummer and say...are we in the right key? Second guitarist joined in...two guitarists nailing it...I'm so far off I literally have to stop playing....total panic ..I've forgotten what key...noo...can't have...... I look donn at guitarist ones pedals board and he hasn't reset the drop pedal to E standard .. and going on the fact guitarist 2 is playing bang on neither has he...so I leg over to G1 and point at his board..he realises changes to E standard now we are in sync but G2 is in the wrong key.. I've stopped playing by this point...G2 finally realises and resets drop pedal ...so I join back in ..by this time we are at the end of verse 1. Everyone thought it was my f*** up...so what would you have done? Stopped the song and start again...try and find the key they were playing in and basically transpose on the fly... Or just hurl your bass at the guitarists until they realised their mistake? Love to know what you think the lesser of the evils is in this situation? Quote
chris_b Posted April 15 Posted April 15 (edited) I don't need a pedal to start a number in the wrong key!!! On Sunday I managed to hear Bm instead of Dm!! Edited April 15 by chris_b 1 Quote
ASW Posted April 15 Posted April 15 A difficult situation, but in my opinion, changing key in the middle of the song is probably the worst option. I would have transposed on the fly, but maybe simplified the bass line if necessary and kept to roots. If this is likely to happen again, there are a few options, such as a note on the set list to remind everyone what setting the pedal should be on. Or you could buy a drop pedal too so you could easily transpose. 1 Quote

I did try and pick the key but I was struggling with on stage volume and just couldn't pick it. In the end we had a laugh about it .. but it does go to show technology is not always for the best.... 😁 Quote

Normally the answer from our drummer is "What's a key?" You quickly figured out it was a tone down, so E to D. If you'd played it in D, maybe used an octave down if you have one, and then thrown your bass at the guitarists after you'd played the song! 2 Quote
Dudgeman Posted April 16 Author Posted April 16 Bizarrely my first thought was D... I did try it just sounded off...I didn't check with the lads later but they may have been in E flat standard... Either way it sounded awful... The fantastic thing now is we are thinking if getting some shirts made up with "Drummer says you're in the wrong key" they will never live it down...we are great mates but the banter will be brutal...😂😂 1 Quote
Linus27 Posted April 16 Posted April 16 Just remember, Victor says there's no wrong notes 🤣 Seriously though, I would of transposed on the fly and played a simplified bass line. 1 Quote
lemmywinks Posted April 17 Posted April 17 Drummer's fault, glare at them until everybody is back on track. 1 Quote
