This an interesting interview with the most under appreciated member of Pantera.

 

 

 

If you're not aware of his work, have a listen to this. The bass behind the guitar solo is absolutely brilliant. He does such a good job of backing up Dime's guitar wizardry

I saw them at Ozzfest with Dimebag and it was proper brilliant. I was too scared and too slight to enter the mosh pit but was an excellent day.

This was so cool. Still love that era of metal, friends of Pantera in the the NOLA scene, Crowbar, CoC etc.

There was some really great metal coming from the south of the US at that time. Plus we also had Sepultura, Life of Agony and Fear Factory plus British bands like Therapy? and The Almighty and the whole grunge scene as well. It was a great time to be in to noisy music. 

It all ended when Limp Bizkit and Blink 182 came along. They were just terrible.

Two things I learnt from that video - Rex doesn't like playing slowly or playing sitting down 😄 It's a shame it ends when it does, he's just starting to relax towards the end.

 

Rex was a MASSIVE influence on me as a teenager, for me he is probably the king (forgive the pun) of metal bass. To this day, when I'm working on heavier music, I'm frequently in a "WWRD?" frame of mind. That Floods bassline... absolute chef's kiss.

 

And also - The Great Southern Trendkill is the greatest metal album of the 90s.

I saw Pantera back when touring smaller venues was still a thing rather than three massive gigs. 

A Friday night in Plymouth on the last date of their UK leg. Absolutely brutal assault on the senses. Couldn't avoid the moshpit as the venue was the moshpit, and why would you want to anyway. 

To be fair Downset got the place all riled up anyway, the atmosphere was electric and just got better when Pantera came on. 

Ahh those were the days.

Saw them at a "secret" gig at The Marquee back in January '93. That was an insane gig. Nearly tripped over Dimebag's pedalboard when stagediving.  

 

Subsequently saw them several more times. They were amazing live. But I've no interest in seeing the new version - not because of it "not being Pantera" (I'm fine with the idea of Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante being in the band), but entirely because of Phil Anselmo and his bigotry, and buying a ticket would be a tacit endorsement of that.

Saw them a couple of times in the early 90's when they were touring VDOP and Darrell was still a "Diamond", first time they were supporting Megadeth, then on their own tour with Gruntruck supporting. Savagery both times. That plec on the left was used to play By Demons Be Driven 😉

You mean analyse their use of melody; harmony; tonality; and use of rhythmic devices?
