KevSpurs Posted Thursday at 18:27 Posted Thursday at 18:27 Hi all I have been researching online for multi coils and alongside turners, herricks etc I came across this brand. They are based in the US. I cannot find much online about reviews and wondered if any of you have any experience with them? https://weldangpickups.com/pages/weldang-pickups I am interested in the codebreaker model for a future Wal alike build. 1 1 Quote
HeadlessBassist Posted Friday at 07:35 Posted Friday at 07:35 (edited) Hi, from his description it sounds like he's created hum cancelling 'stacked coils' like the Status single coils. (Tell me if I'm way off here, anyone!) Is your Wal-alike build going to have a similar parametric-style eq to the original? Did you try looking on TalkBass, being as the maker is American? (Good luck with their rather random search box!) Edited Friday at 07:36 by HeadlessBassist 1 Quote
KevSpurs Posted Friday at 07:42 Author Posted Friday at 07:42 Thanks I will try TalkBass. On the site he is alluding to similarities with Wals. Just keen to know if anyone had used them cheers Quote
three Posted Friday at 08:06 Posted Friday at 08:06 (edited) Some nice bass designs IMO - all new to me. A bit of a Thompson/Wal-alike with a good few other influences (Alembic, Status - quite a transatlantic combination). If the multicoil pickups work/sound as advertised, then a reasonably priced option (and good to see more makers getting into the multicoil space… if you’re interested in a Wal-like tone). Graphite necks (Klos) on the basses too - interesting twist - and use of machine screws is reassuring (if executed well). In all, very reasonable prices for the specs. I’d really like to try both the basses and pickups Edited Friday at 08:08 by three 1 Quote

Totally agree especially as there is a limited choice. Never played a bass with graphite neck, how do they play? 1 Quote

No need for a trussrod. Soundwise, can of worms. I am playing an MG Genesis, a Vigier Passion II (carbon part reaches the neck pickup), a Status MM neck bass, a Status headless copy, and I used to play an MG Quantum 5 SPi. What I like in the graphite is its stability. Neck profiles are different, but all basses stay in tune very well. 2 Quote

I've got a bitsa bass I made with Herrick multicoils, lusithand preamp and a Klos graphite neck. Happy to say it sounds amazing. I'm just messing around here, but if you're interested. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DI4jCnQCDyb/?igsh=ZzgwNW5reDlzNXl5 2 Quote
KevSpurs Posted 9 hours ago Author Posted 9 hours ago Thanks for the info on the graphite neck guys. @Wolverinebass nice bass like the tone, you happy with the Herricks? 1 Quote
KevSpurs Posted 9 hours ago Author Posted 9 hours ago I have messaged Mike from Weldang and he seems like a top guy. Gave a very honest and helpful explanation of his pickups, knows his stuff. I don’t think they are what I’m looking for for this build, but I would defo look at them for a future build. Plus very reasonable pricing. Quote

They're very good pickups. There are some things to be aware of. You have to get the route lowered as they're deeper than normal MM pickups. Secondly, and I've no idea if Martin has addressed this as I bought the pickups 2 years ago. I had to wait a long time for the neck as I was one of the first to order one. The channels where you would put the screws instead of being straight up and down were flaring out from the body of the pickup. So I had to have them filed so they'd be able to be properly adjusted. Were you to order from him, I'd ask if he's sorted that issue out. He seemed to be aware of it when I asked, so I'm assuming it's been rectified by now and he's very good to deal with. Sonically, they're excellent and work very well with the Lusithand filters. Plus, having bought a fair amount of stuff from Nuno, I can tell you not only does he really know his stuff, he's also a very good guy as well. In the video I'm playing through a sansamp psa 1.1 into a Vanderkley 2x12. Both pickups are equal and the filters are not even the full way open, nor are they pulled. 1 Quote

The only graphite-necked basses that I've played are Status - I've owned and played quite a few and still have a fretted and fretless. There seems to be a consensus that Status graphite necks have a sort of soft D profile - I think this is pretty accurate and meets with my own experience. I find the shape very comfortable and it's easy to get around on the necks - I've had some gloss and some satin finishes and tend to prefer the former. The arguments re: contribution to tone are endless, though to me (and with respect to Status), the sound is tight, clear, highly focused and accurate - really quite pokey with masses of sustain. The stability of the necks is also incredible - set-up is easy (and the basses stay 'set-up'), and a very low action is possible. My old Series II doesn't have a truss rod and the neck is almost flat. Action can be incredibly low. I hope this helps, though as above, I can only comment on my experience with Status Quote
