Good morning groovers,

I've got a 2008 CV Jazz and the bridge pickup is a bit lame.

I've seen a set of Bareknuckle Jazz pickups and am considering "treating" the bass to them.

Who's really happy with their bridge pickup and what you got under the hood........?

Thank you in advance,

Chewie.

For added fatness the Seymour Duncan Hot Stack is a good pickup, hum-cancelling too which is a bonus. I copied Duff McKagan & put one in the bridge of an Aerodyne Jazz and it made a lot of difference, not so much to the actual tone but to the amount of it.

I certainly recommend Bareknuckle jazz pickups .. not sure they’ll give you a ‘fat’ sound but they are in my top 3 jazz pups & I’ve tried a fair few (Dimarzio/Fender/Seymour Duncan/Wizard which I really liked but not sure newer ones are the same) .. other top 2 are Nordstrand Big Singles & current ones that replaced my Bareknuckles which are Areo .. if you can get a good deal on them then do it .. or I might part with my spare set as I’m breaking current bass they are in ..

Going off on a slight tangent, have you tried adjusting the stock pickup closer to the strings? There's a sweet spot for Jazz pickups, usually about 3-4mm from the bottom of the string to the pole pieces on the bridge pickup, and around 5-6mm on the neck pickup. That can make a huge amount of difference to your sound before you start any modifications.

I'd maybe look for a stacked humbucker or double rail type that will fit the single coil rout but give significantly more output than most standard single coil J pups.

Hello Headless,

Yeah, I've tried all that.  The neck pickup sounds great IMO.......  I'll have another try with your recommendations later.

9.5K - is that all? ;)

"The (Reverend) Jazz Bomb bridge pickup features warm mids and a focused attack, enhanced output, and still percussive when you dig in. Hum-free. 43 gauge wire, ceramic magnet, 14K ohms."

Not that DC resistance is the be-all and end-all of pickup power...

I despise Jazz basses, and I'm not a huge fan of bridge pickups of any kind, yet the bridge pickup sound of my Reverend Triad is one of the finest sounding bridge pickups I've ever heard.  As soon as I tried it in the shop, I was very impressed.

I love jazz basses but I've never been thrilled by the bridge pickup.............. I want to change.

Jazz bomb pickups, right?

Ooof, that sounds like an extreme version of the SD Quarter Pounders.  My only experience of those was in a Nate Mendel P bass and to my ears it was a horrible sounding thing like being slapped around the face by harsh mids and lacking any depth or warmth.  Only useable with the vol turned down and the tone backed off.  Obvs YMMV but not a pleasant experience for me personally.
