Jean-Luc Pickguard
I don't know about the basses, but I tried a few Ashton acoustic guitars for my son a while ago and they were terrible cheap cr@p.
BenK
I'll end up doing some modding but is the woodwork, fretwork and finish good?
Buzz
Do a search, they come up occasionally in topics but I don't think there's a thread for them. Personally, based on my Ashton electo-acoustic guitar I'd probably avoid. Nothing wrong with them per say, but just cheap and kinda thrown together. Hamster
AFAIK all the Ashton gear is made in China, which can be a good or bad thing, it's all down to the materials and workmanship. I don't know Ashton's availability over here but I'd have a serious look at these instead which are pretty good - http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintagebass.html

Their ukes were terrible as well I recall.

rjb
Just out of interest, what's your budget? You should check the "for sale" section:- £180 gets you a Bass Collection SB320. These were great basses that sold for £500 odd back in the 90's (I bought one). Perfect for a starter - really easy to play. This would be my top recommendation - you can't go wrong with these. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=50147 There are also a few old Westone basses from the 80s for sale here that shouldn't cost the earth. These things are built like tanks and have a great tone. An entire generation of Basschatters started on these fellas! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=49569 If you buy secondhand you can make your money go alot further, no need to buy dodgy stuff! HarryPotter
For the money you won't beat a Westone Thunder to cut your teeth on, and it'll match your ability for a fair while after this - built like a tank and of a very high standard of construction - 25 years old examples are still rock solid with easily another 25 years left in them. You can pick them up for very little money on here. Be warned though they have a 'precision' width (ish) neck but it is very very comfy to play and they are quite heavy compared to a lot of modern basses. Musky
Good price on that Thunder 1A there. I still remember turning up to an audition in the early 80's, and the band wouldn't stop going on about the fantastic tone the guy before me was getting out of his Thunder. I was quite put out at the time because they never said a word about my Precision which cost 2 or 3 times as much. Plus it was made by Matsumoku, who weren't in the habit of turning out duff basses. Unlike certain other manufacturers at the time.
