fatgoogle
Hi again. Im still looking for a double bass, and need one sooner then later, as im not sure how long i can borrow my teachers. I suppose more than anything i need something that will last till i can afford something really decent or good. My price range is around 600 euro's plus postage. So ive been looking heavily at stenton. They look really nice, and apart from the horendous shipping arent badly priced. Anyone play one. I asked on TB and theyve just about said that e vrey bass ive looked at is sh*t. Ones from thomann ebay, cremona and palatino. But i really need something that will last and decent projection. Any help from all youse. Thanks Sam H
velvetkevorkian
IME the Stentors are pretty decent for the money- I would say you'd be lucky to find one for 600 euros though. Asking on TB about any bass that costs less than about £3k is a recipe for a stern talking to from the regulars there, as it sounds like you've found... Part of that might be the setup though, which you ought to factor in with the price of a set of strings. €600 is what? £500? If I had that budget to get a bass, I'd be looking for a used instrument rather than buying new.
jonny-lad
I played a half-size stentor that I thought was quite nice! +1 for factoring in the price of set-up and strings aswell!

Excellent student basses, way better qualioty than any of the cheap chineses basses stocked in most music shops or on ebay. I had this exact model, 50/4 blonde. Nice bass. Nice price. Bright sounding, as most new basses are. But very well made, loud and punchy, well set up, delivered from factory right to my door. You can buy this same bass only with rosewood fittings from Thomann online shop. They stock several Strunal basses, but rename them Thomann 1 etc

I think the Strunal models are 'Thomann 1' (all ply) Thomann 2 (hybrid) and Thomann 3 (carved) each in various finishes. There are few places where you can handle decent cheap basses, but several where you can handle expensive carved ones ... but that doesn't really help. Thwaites (north) is the best bet - they carry some cheap basses too. Google them. Or Bridgewood and Niezert in Stoke Newington. Or there's a dealer out west called Peter Tyler - he has a house full of about 50 basses, but not really just for browsing. Or you'd be welcome to drop in at my place, I've 3 basses you could try out, 2 ply, one carved.

Mr Healey (can't remember his first name) was extremely helpful, sympathetic, and pragmatic when it came to repairs on my very cheap and unworthy DB. He might help point you in the right direction. tinyd
This Shen SB80 http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?prod...1568&cat=16 looks pretty good - I have a Shen SB180, which is the hybrid model, and I'm really happy with it. From reading TalkBass etc, the Shens seem to be amongst the best of the Chinese instruments. I know the guy is asking a lot more than your budget allows, but the advert's been up for a long time so you might be able to knock him down a good bit.
