bubinga5
Right im a bass player who likes a bass player who is a slave to the music, ala Marcus Miller, Meshell....But VW just blows me away with his rythmic sense and timing..Is there anyone who can touch this guy with his monster technique...Its just incredible.. Here he is with Bela Fleck... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZxT85-CSFU If he left all the flash behind, you know he would play a serious groove though... This is killer..just amazing!!!! hubrad
I have a live DVD of the Flecktones.. at one bit, the banjo the bass and a guest tabla player are trading licks. Mindblowing!
RayFW
I can play like Victa no probs. All I need is a drummer who can play like this:
thepurpleblob
I saw BF and the FTs live a year or so ago. Left halfway through - dull and boring beyond belief IMO. You don't need to convince me that they are great musicians but I don't find them remotely musical.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZxT85-CSFU
Best bit is at 1:07 where he completely loses it, lets his hands drop for a quick shake of the head ... and just picks up again like nothing happened. There's a guy comes to my local jam, name of Jovan, who is like a pub-level VW. He's technically far in advance of any other bass player I've ever heard in any pub, and his chops are truly awesome (as his his brisket). Trouble is, he never plays what the song needs. Why play one note when you can fit in 17? Is the guitarist soloing? OK, I'll play a bass solo underneath him in competition. Just like with VW, I'd love to have even a quarter of his ability - but I'd never use it like that!

bubinga5
I dont think hes over playing in the last two vids.?.Just awsome groove! VW seems to have a bad rep when it comes to flashy playing, but i guess thats what seels the tickets to his shows...I very much doubt Victor would over play, in the context of a song..At the end of the day he is a solo artist who plays bass!! VW is the finest. Everything he plays with The Flecktones is supportive. It's bassists and drummers overplaying in general that I find annoying. I could start a whole thread about drummers that overplay!
XB26354
He's been playing since he was a toddler and looks more natural playing the bass than anyone I've ever seen. Some of the older Flecktones stuff is quite nice and when he plays groove he's really got it, but I've never really liked his way of playing, or his sound and reliance on slap/pop/tap without making it particularly musical. Hate to say it being a bass player but there are very, very few albums out there by bass players that I can listen to. It's funny that he goes on about saying something with your instrument when I can't work out what he's trying to say. With the YT videos posted it's all a little busy, but then the last two don't really have a song so any monster player is naturally going to overplay - VW, Steve Smith and Carter Beauford are all well capable of playing what the song needs. So I don't really care for his playing but you can't deny the talent and the technique.

I know many skilled muso's, even guitarists. My friend can also shred like mad...but NONE of our songs have even ONE guitar solo AT ALL! I love skilled players yeah, but I love music more. After a while...Wooten started to bore me and well...I'm not so interested anymore sorry...
iamapirate
TBH, can you REALLY overplay a song if there's only drums and bass? And is it me, or does he look very wooden in the last link on the first post? 4:32 and 4:45. I mean, his right shoulder just looks as though it's rigid.
