webby
I've come to realise that I need some earplugs after my 2nd rehearsal the other night in what was too small a room for a full band. My ears were ringing afterwards and it makes me feel awful. I remember my younger days in clubs and at live gigs. I always hated the thought of that ringing sound when I got home. So, earplugs. I can't afford the moulded sets just yet, but I want to get something. Should I get the Alpine MusicSafe Pro Earplugs, or the ACS ER20's? The ER20's are available in a smaller fitting, but how would I know if I happen to have a smaller ear canal? I was gonna just get the ER20's but read that the Alpines are more comfortable and more discreet.
Adrenochrome
The clear 'handles' on the ER20s do stick out a bit but aren't that noticeable. I use those Elacin ER20s and find them comfortable and effective. The comfort might just be luck that they fit me well. Either way they're cheap and do a job. chris_b
I don’t understand why people rehearse in small rooms, with the amps facing each other, and at full stage volume!! Surely that has to be unnecessary!

GarethFlatlands
I use the ER20's; much better than Boots foam ones and more confortable over long peiods than the xmas tree type. They only protrude a lot if you leave the cord on. Sound quality is also very good and I've had them for years with no hearing problems. webby
I bought a pair of ER20's recently (Our drummer is ever so loud) but when I wear them I find the bass a little hard to follow. It's like everthing's turned down, which is what I wanted of course, but the bass seems to get lost a little bit. Maybe I should just turn my amp up? With my ER15s, the bass is actually louder - or at least I can certainly hear it better.

BobTheBassist
+1 to the ER20's. Very good. As for hearing the bassline better that's partly because low frequency stuff doesn't come in through your ear it makes your skull resonate so ear plugs don't block them so much, though obviously they cut off alot of the harmonics. Salt on your Bass?
So i ordered my er-20s through mp3 company online, went to get impressions done but my ears were too blocked! Got them syringed, and asked the nurse if ok for imprezsions to be taken, and got a resounding 'yes!' . Back to the audiologist, and theyre too blocked again! 65%! Going for another syringe but now im nervous they wont as you can see my eardrum and theres increased risk of perferation! Anyone else had this problem? Got som 20s to tide me over, and may not even get a full refund cause of the audiologist appointments that lasted all of 90 seconds! Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!! They should have a gadget that can suck the wax out rather than “power hosing” it out.

ZMech
Just got a pair of ER20's. Just judging by listening to music in my room, and my housemate talking to me, they're amazingly even sound reduction, really does sound the same but quieter. I'm not in a band atm, and don't expect to be in the near future, but will probably get some custom fits if/when I do. Does anyone know if the plastic bits light pick up the lights and start glowing in clubs/stage lighting? If so I might just stick a bit of flesh coloured paint on them. Edit: saying that, if/when my band start gigging regularly and i can afford it, I intend to get proper custom moulded jobs. HeavyJay
Just been to specsavers for a free hearing test after reading what everyone put on here. I've been playing about 15 years, not at excessive volumes but certainly amplified and I've got some moderate hearing damage at higher frequencies. Ordered a pair of the molded ear defenders. The filters are er9 or er15, I can't remember! Since I sing quite a lot in the band as well as play bass, apparently they're good for that. £129 well spent in my opinion. That is if they work!
