dangerboy Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I have dipped my toe into the world of valve amps by buying one of these: http://acoustic.homeunix.net/twiki/bin/vie...eCombo164and165 It's primarily for guitar, but also sounds great on bass when run into a 15" cab. At the moment it's quite noisy, even from the pre-amp out, and the seller suggested it could do with new pre-amp tubes. It takes 3 12aX7s and 1 12aT7. Do any of you have good recommendations for high-quality, cheap replacements? I've never dealth with valves before. Quote
Musky Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Hi Steve. Someone was asking a very similar question the other day and I pointed them to Brycebites preamp valve comparison. Obviously the thread's not what it was, but if you're a member you could checkout the updated list at finnbass. There's also a chap over there 'Oxblood', who knows his valves, & I found to be very helpful in the past. Quote
ahpook Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 you could have a word with the folks at watford valves - i asked them for some suggestions when i was revalving my ampeg and was chuffed with the results. Quote

onehappybunny Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I have the Mullard 12AT7 in my Mesa 400+ and it sounds lush Not too pricey c.£10 from Watford valves. IIRC Their 12AX7's are about 3x the price also +1 on the brycebites valve comparison Quote
umph Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 i'd recomend going for JJ's if your going for new ones or mullards / brimar if your going NOS Quote
