Give the vocalist something to do during the instrumental number! Quote
umph Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009
Here's a link to a guy in Nottingham making 1000 watt valve amps. 1000w valve amp He's using just 4 813 transmitter valves as opposed to the 20 or so 6L6s you'd need if you were to use 'ordinary' valves. I'm surprised we haven't seen more manufacturers going down this road. The only downside seems to be the rather frightening 2500 volts on the anodes but having said that, 400 volts will kill you just as dead....
i've seen this beast the pictures don't do it justice, you should see the new one hes just made with 20 807s its even more of a beast! Kiwi Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Could someone maybe send him a link to this thread? It would be really great for him to do a build diary here as well. He's brilliant BTW, there are some blokes out there who have built their own water cooled desktop PC's, so if the heat of the valves ever became an issue then it might be possible to build a cooling system along these lines. henry norton Posted July 10, 2009 Author Posted July 10, 2009 I suppose water and +/- 5 volts isn't quite as deadly as water and 2,500 volts. Actually, quite allot of transmitter valves were liquid cooled - the valves this guy is using are quite small in comparison. There are probably no real limits to how powerful a valve amp can be other than how much weight you can lift. Quote
velvetkevorkian Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 I also recall seeing a computer immersed in vegetable oil for cooling reasons- handy if your deep fat fryer breaks and you fancy some chips. Although I suppose that would make the whole assembly virtually unliftable. Quote
jensenmann Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 bigger transmitter tubes than these 813s have been cooled with hot water vapour. So imagine the next stage of a tube bassamp: 10000 Watts with it´s own heater for the steam..... Anyway I´d like to hear his amp distort Quote
GreeneKing Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Your car spark plugs operate at about 20,000 volts and they won't (normally) kill you Quote

Dan_Nailed Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 Volts and Watts aren't the killer, it's Amps that kills you. I've had plenty of lovely 240V wall shocks but at 2A it's not too bad. However high enough volts can stop dodgy hearts, so don't try and burn a soldeing iron through the back of any plugs (as I once saw at high school in electronics class). Quote
Buzz Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 That is a monster. Quite paltry in the terms of transmitters, but a monster bass amp. Quote
hatori Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 That is freaking awesome ! Needs a more manly name tho, something like Blowtorch or Stellar deathray ! Quote
Noisyjon Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I'd Love to hear it through a couple of big cabs, but what would realistically suit/handle this kind of amp? Im thinking a pair of Barefaced Vintage cabs - woof woof! Quote
Mr. Foxen Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Not sure you need the sensitivity, a pair of those Acme 4x10s would be good I reckon. Quote
