beardybass
My mates, The Pilots, friends of mine from college and Uni. The bass player, Luke, is really bloody good! He sings sometimes too. Not a famous band, but new, young, and good. http://www.myspace.com/thepilotsband

midgetiser
Yeah, Kings of Leon bass lines are pretty dull. They work well with the music but they could be a bit more interesting. I'd also add Maximo Park to the list. Their bassist is pretty good and comes out with some great stuff. Good to see indie type music with something other than the usual standard bass lines. I agree with the Mars Volta. Some cracking playing going on there. Definitely give them a good listening.
M4L666
The new Dream Theater album is accessible for metal. Myung mainly plays root notes, but there's a lot of interesting root notes in Dream Theater's music. I suppose the earlier stuff is better for bass- that was when they were more layered. Bassassin
Here's a band local to me who sound like they might the sort of thing you're after: Incendiary Bats (Edinburgh) Not caught them live yet, their drummer turned up at one of our gigs & was full of (very drunken) praise afterwards, so I checked out his band and I think they're great, & the bassist is very off the wall & melodic. Jon.
dannybuoy
Any band that had records out before 2005 I don't think count. I've probably heard them. I certainly was a big fan of Sonic Youth (and Pixies, and Dinosaur Jr, and Buffalo Tom, and Swervedriver, and Neds, and ...) when I was 16, I'm 35 now, they definitely don't count!
They surely do count if they're still releasing albums and touring! I saw them a couple of months ago and they have new album out, 'The Eternal'.

Randy_Marsh
+ 1 for A Wilhelm Scream my personal choice would be some Protest The Hero, Arif is an amazing bassist
iamapirate
ooh, a band that probably no one has heard of called 'House of Heroes' They're kind of hard rock with a slightly (I hate this word) poppy twist. Catchy hard rock. http://www.myspace.com/houseofheroes The bassist basically writes all the songs and the lyrics and you can tell by the music- very bass-based melodies he has going on. Oh and all 4 of them sing EPIC!

karlbbb
Another +1 from me A Wilhelm Scream. Mainly from the "Career Suicide" album. Brian Robinson writes some really interesting lines! Great tone, also!
YouMa
Im not being negative but most new bands dont seem to be very good bass wise, kids (cousins) who play are all listening to the red hot chilli peppers and janes addiction, the same stuff i was listening to when i was 16,im the same age as you thenameistaken. KevB
There are some nice bass parts on the first Wombats album if they are 'indie' enough for you.
