BigRedX
Next up is a trio of basses from Laggan Bassworks Basses with 3, 4 and 5 strings... Nothing particularly unusual here (except for the 3-string), but some nice slightly different body shapes, and I do like the way the wbody woods have been cut on the 4-string so that the grain emphasises the shape of the bass. Good value as well (especially with the current £/$ exchange rate) none of the instruments pictured here cost over £1000.
ped
The Löwenherz basses are not my cup of tea either, but like you say, a very interesting bass in a weird and wonderful way! The lion's head looks almost like a cracker present - it is so tacky it is ALMOST awesome. Almost.
BigRedX
Just in case the standard lion head isn't bling enough for you, from the Löwenherz website:
You would like diamond eyes in the lionhead? We can do it! This will be at an extra charge!
...
wotnwhy
Well I'm glad it got a reaction even if it's mainly negative. It worries me when I post some of these instruments and they go without any kind of comment. It does seem though that it's the fairly normal basses that tend to get the most extreme reactions - as though people relate to them by their similarity to what they already know and react accordingly...
obviously i can't speak for everyone else, but judging by the number of veiws on this thread as opposed to actual posts (especially taking into account most posts are by you) i'd guess that there are an awful lot of people who just browse this thread, doesn't mean that the basses have any less of an impact. please don't be put off by lack of replies, or i'll have to set up a couple more accounts and use those to reply too! now these laggan basses are right up my street! and all under a grand!?!? wowzer! EDIT: silly typoos Edited December 4, 2007 by wotnwhy
ped
Big +1 to Tom's post - loads of people are reading this! Oh I had better be on my best behaviour! The red eyes on the lion are what make it super tacky/special/cool in my opinion. I wouldn't say no to some diamonds on the switches and maybe some neons under the hood, maybe a fat air scoop and an induction kit

bnt
Today I found out about a guitar called the Wangcaster (NSFW = guess why!). The luthier, Doug Rowell, specialises in elaborate hand carving of bodies, and also made a few weird basses, such as the Yellow Submarine bass: Edited December 14, 2007 by bnt

I had a ton of stick from my band when I had a Warwick Fortress with it's phallic upper horn . Playing this would probably shut them up Edited December 14, 2007 by OldGit
BigRedX
The carving's interesting although I've seen a couple of other builders do much more radical stuff. Mostly guitars rather than basses but I'll post some links if anyone is interested... I haven't forgotten about this thread, but work's been mega busy and I'm still waiting to hear back from a couple of luthiers so I know that their work is still current. Hopefully there'll be some new posts next week and then I'll be on to stuff that's no longer available new in the new year. BigRedX
While I'm still waiting for a coupe of luthiers to get back to me if they're still in business... Here's a NAMM update for some of the makes mentioned previously in the this thread. FretKing. After casting doubts about FretKing's current existence and the fact that the website I had book marked is pretty moribund, here's a brand new Europa bass spotted at NAMM And more importantly a new FretKing Site I was lucky enough to catch Trevor Wilkinson on the Vintage stand at Music Live 2007 and mentioned that I had a custom FretKing Esprit Guitar and was after a Europa Bass. He mentioned that he was just finishing off a white Europa and would I be interested? Unfortunately I managed to lose his email otherwise I might now be the proud owner of this bass and not have to content myself with pictures of it from NAMM. Anyway moving on. Here's 4 new Lace Helix basses Five strings and fretlesss models. Can't wait for these to be available in the UK More details here and good to see a company offering fretless models for less than the fretted equivalents. There's also rumours that there will be a helix with the twisted neck to match the original Cybercaster guitar. Finally a halfway decent photo of a Moses Graphite bass... A 5-string Vertical Jump Bass with a blue acrylic body. Very nice indeed... And amazingly more pictures on the Moses Graphite website here including some of the Custom Headless Starhawk Bass. I hoping to have some new basses for your enjoyment (or ridicule) at the end of the week and then hope to be updating at least once a week for as long as there are instruments out of the ordinary out there. 7string
Just to post this onto this thread... I bought a bass from one of the builders on this very thread. I looked at the website http://www.bas-extravaganza.nl and just thought it was great. Using Babelfish, I managed to type in Dutch and translate his messages back. For those that were just too difficult or obscure, I e-mailed my Uncle who's been living in Holland for the last 30 years, so he came in very handy. Anyway, here's what I bought: This is the Kinderbasje or "Child's play" bass and it was built out of the spare pieces left over after building the "proper" basses. I love the shape and it sounds pretty good too. The neck profile is a sharp V, but extremely playable, and there are letters instead of side dots so I'll never forget where "G" is. It's a great little bass and I thank BigRedX for starting, and continuing, this thread. It's been a real fun and interesting read PS. If you're interested, all of my basses are under the thread titled "7strings stuff" in the "Bass Porn" section.

BigRedX
Thanks for all the comments, and glad to see that this thread has resulted in at least 1 purchase! Please if anyone else buys a bass as a result of the info on this thread please post them up... I'll continue on from where 7string left off with my latest purchase... A Reverend Rumblefish JJ 5-String. After failing to buy a couple that appeared on TB just before Christmas, this turned up on eBay in the UK. And very nice it is too... In need of a setup to suit me, and some attention to the controls which will happen over the next week or so, but the initial impressions are good; I can certainly see what all the fuss is about them on TB. A cool retro-modern look and an punchy sound, with just a hint of hollow body colouring through my studio monitors - I won't have a chance to use it through my rig until our next rehearsal. There's a slight tendency to neck-dive given the light body and the wide 35" scale length, but nothing a comfort strap can't handle. Given what I'm getting from this bass I definitely need to get hold of the Brad Houser model...

It's the bridge that really frightens me !!!!
what a curious bass! about as heavy metal as a bass could look. but with a wooden bridge... and the high strings don't even come close to lining up with the pickup pole pieces! the lower ones aren't too close either.. BigRedX
That is a scary thing indeed! Probably more in terms of construction than looks. I think that bridge construction is the only way that they could fit one on without it over-hanging the end of the body (although that hasn't stopped Reverend). Had a look at the RPG site as well and there's plenty of other scary stuff including some of those weird combination double necks that have been turning up on eBay recently, and all of it left-handed. Actually looking at the site makes me glad that I ended up playing guitar and bass the 'right way round' as it brings home the sorts of compromises that left-handed guitarists have to endure (and normally while paying a higher price) in order to get something outside of the mainstream Gibson and Fender styles, until they reach the custom build price point. BigRedX
Time for some new basses: Here's three from Petrounov I first saw one of these on eBay and was intrigued, but couldn't find any more information about them. That's because the website is brand new as of November last year and still very much under construction. From what is there they seem to do both guitars and basses in this unusual shape which I think works much better for the basses (the guitars look kind of blobby...) The strange body shape is supposed to accentuate 'pure' tones according what little information is on the website, and I'm not entirely sure about the positioning of the G tuner on the 5-string models. They do appear to have impressed the speaker cab manufacturer Schroeder who are selling them in their on-line store.
ARGH
it looks like one of those 'C'mon' soft cuddly things that are used in advertising the Corsa.
