I'd suggest you'd need that amount of cool (or maybe just a tad more) to play that bass in public
BigRedX
Whew! just waded through the whole thread for the first time. I have to say that I found 99% of the basses here within to be totally ugly. Having said that, a few were very 'interesting' - I particularly liked the one string bass!
Not a problem. The whole point of this thread was to show that there is a massive selection of good quality instruments out there for those of us who want something a little (or a lot) different. There's plenty of threads here drooling over the basses of Leo Fender's three companies and their look-alikes and to be honest I simply can't see the attraction. Personally I like my music to be at least a little removed from the norm and the instruments that I use to create a perform that music to match that. For me the visual aspect is as important as everything else. I now own basses by 4 of the builders featured on this thread - Gus, Lightwave, Reverend, and Tokai, and given the opportunity and the cash I would probably own more provided that the sound and playability fitted with what I wanted. And having said that it guess it's time for some more basses...
BigRedX
So todays new basses come from DAC in France There appears to be two basic models, the Synergie: and the Baobass For me the Synergie is an interesting bass - similar in concept to the Harvey Citron AE Basses but a bit more elegant. There are two versions of this a 'conventional' solid body with a single pickup and the one shown here with a chambered body and a Schertler system. The Baobass is design has a nod to CT basses but starting at a much more sensible €1200 for the bass shown here. Walnut body and maple neck with a single Delano pickup. Simple and elegant. BigRedX
If I have the patience to work my way through the Aries site there'll no doubt be some of their basses featured in the future... In the meantime here's an interesting bass form D'Algeria Made in Brazil, most of the models 'borrow' rather heavily from existing designs, but amongst these I found this interesting gem... It's one of their signature models built for André Gomes. It has an interesting fish-tail body design 32" scale length and built-in compressor. D'Algeria also do a Trevor Bolder signature model of a more conventional design. Kiwi
After 4 hours searching this morning, I re-discovered what is perhaps one of the only true custom graphite bass manufacturers (ie will make you a custom all-graphite instrument from a shape you supply). http://www.miller-instruments.com/ This is one of their standard models - all graphite:
BigRedX
CK have you actually been in contact with them? These are one of the custom builders I would have featured here by now if it wasn't for the fact that they simply won't answer any of my emails and that picture you posted is about the best one on the site! The prices (if they're still current) are excellent when you consider that their direct competition is BassLab (who are more than happy to answer my many emails about construction and specifications and have offered me a bass to try first when I'm ready to more seriously consider having them build me something).
Kiwi
I thought their prices were pretty good too but there's no way to tell how current they are. I've just sent them an email but judging by their site, they're not big on the internet as a marketing tool. Although they have updated the news this year... ...did you try calling them at all? They do have numbers listed. Otherwise I'm quite happy to check out basslab!
BigRedX
Time to add some new basses before this thread drops off the first page... ;-) Here's a selection of modern Retro designs from DiPinto Belvedere Standard Mach IV and Galaxie More elegant than Italia IMO. I could certainly find a place for the Mosrite influenced Mach IV and the angular Galaxie in my collection. All 34" scale as well. Shiny without being too tacky. Prices around the $800 mark. BigRedX
So that's where his site is now! I posted pictures and linked to an earlier incarnation of the site back at post 172 in this thread. This is at least the third different place he's been on the internet, and it appears he's no longer trying to sell the basses as a business. When I first started gathering info and bookmarks that have become the basis for this weird and wonderful collection I exchanged several emails with the maker of these bases when he was offering the steel Quadrant bass for about $600. However just before I decided I was going to order one he stopped answering emails and pretty soon after that the original Phaedrus.com website disappeared. Thanks for the new link.
