chris_b
Chaps, I'm ordering some new (DR) strings, as I have done for years, but this time I've been stumped! What are tapered strings? Are they better than ordinary strings? What's the difference? Thanks for your help.
alexclaber
Tapered strings have fewer windings over the bridge saddles. Usually sound a bit brighter. I used to use them on my Hohner but my Warwick and RIM Custom are bright enough that the seemingly thicker resonance of non-tapered works better. BottomEndian
Just so you know what they look like, B and E tapered:
xilddx
More piano tone apparently. Not tried them, I use DR Black Beauties whicah are not tapered. Superb strings.
alexclaber
Strings are definitely one of those things where it's all about the interaction between the instrument and the string. Curiously even when making seemingly drastic changes in string type the tone still comes more from the bass's natural resonances and structure, so it's then a question of finding a string that gels best. Alex[/quote] Think you're right, there. I changed the DR BBs (roundwound) on my Kopo fretless 4 the other night, to La Bella DT black tapewound. The growly character of the bass is slightly more pronounced (oddly), it's deeper, warmer, rounder sounding and the volume/output has increased. Plus, it feels so slinky now! Like a new bass. I could never have predicted these effects. I'm very pleased, those strings are nearly 50 smackers a set! chris_b
Thanks for the info. I think I'll stick with the non-tapered, as usual. Cheers.
mrcrow
you can see what they look like i had them and didnt think they made much difference but then i like to change around and not everyone does these intonation setting may be more accurate since its just cores sitting on the saddles not imho worth paying extra for
