Doddy Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 There are so many great upright players around. But some of my favourites are guys like Christian McBride,Ray Brown,Paul Chambers,NHOP,Ron Carter,John Patitucci,Eddie Gomez....there are just too many to mention or think of right now. I nearly forgot.......Edgar Meyer is particularly awesome. Quote

Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I'm really into Willie Dixon at the moment. He was a great songwriter and his basslines work perfectly without being flashy. I love James Jamerson's upright on the Four Tops Jazz album as well you can tell he really enjoyed playing on those tracks. Quote

Not a lot of info about him but check out this little article: http://www.bassplayer.com/article/livin-large-big/jan-05/540 Quote

EssentialTension Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 At the moment Danny Thompson and Paul Chambers. Quote
TheRev Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 (edited) Ali Friend and Danny Thompson are the guys who got me playing double bass after 17 years of electric bass. Recently though, I've been really getting into Paul Chambers on Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' I can't let a mention of Danny Thompson pass without posting this absolute gem of a recording. His solo gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up every single time I hear it. Edited September 3, 2009 by TheRev Quote
Clarky Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 My all-time fave DB player is Scott Lafaro in the Bill Evans trio - so melodic and driving Also big votes for Paul Chambers (mainly with Miles Davis but his solo stuff is also pretty good, eg, try You'd be so nice to come home to) and Charlie Mingus (esp on the Massey Hall album with the all-star line-up of Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Max Roach) Quote

I've been listening to them a lot too. Can't play like any of them though. Quote

Pete Academy Posted September 4, 2009 Posted September 4, 2009 I always look up to Stanley Clarke. But that's mainly because he's about six foot six. Quote

bassace Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Red Mitchell tuned his bass in fifths. He recorded an album with just himself and Clark Terry. Here is a clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOWaUR6ta0c Quote
