Double bass buying

I wouln't mind a stab at the ol double bass after years of electric but the cost is rather prohibitive and then i saw this ad on my local gumtree -

but I dont know how to approach it as i know feck all about double basses - I would like a bargain but dont want to offend the guy also wouldnt know what was good or bad unless it was a total pile of crap I suppose.
Contacted the guy but he just said come and see it no guide price or anything - I get the impression he knows feck all about them too.

Any advice?

Why don't you try to find somebody who knows about basses to view it with you ? Might even be worth paying somebody ! It might save you a lot of money in the long run.
Plenty of bass players in Glascow.
Call up the RSNO or the BBC SSO - see if they can put you in touch with one of their players.

Maybe worth having a word with the Violin Shop in Yorkhill- they do valuations etc, and if it is a POS they may be able to offer something more suitable.
