If so I will bring; Aggie DB750 (unless there's too much amp-age already!) + Aggie cabs Vigier Arpege 5 (new series 4 model) And one of the following 4 stringers - Sadowsky UV70 Metro / Jaydee GA24 custom / GB IV (early Spitfire from 1999) Laters... silverfoxnik
Ok, more on the next post...
..So, the venue allows us to have 3 areas in which to hold our activities: 1. Plaza 2. Theatre 3. Cafe Here's a picture of the Theatre: And one of the Cafe: We don't have a picture of the Plaza but according to Hamster, when you enter the building there's a Reception area which leads to the Plaza and then onto the Theatre and Cafe, both of which are easy to locate from the Plaza. At Reception we will have a register, asking you to sign in and pay your £10 and for security reasons, we will ask you to list what equipment you've brought in on the day so we can keep a record of it in case of any problems (hope that's OK?). Activities will be taking place as follows: Plaza = Quiet Room (Happy Jack), 'Music Theory' Workshop (jakesbass), 'Double Bass' Workshop (bassace) and 'Set-ups' (by Graham Wheeler) Theatre = General Area (to set up all your gear), 'Tone & Acoustics' Workshop (alexclaber), 'V-Bass Demo' (ped), 'Raffle' (5pm) Cafe = 'Jamming Room' (with 2 drummers on the day) Here's what the Schedule for the day looks like: The schedule is an approximate guide and times will undoubtedly vary a bit on the day.. Just to say that Graham Wheeler has kindly offered to come and do set-ups on the day and talk about how he approaches doing them. He's not so keen on doing a talk to a large group of people at once but is really happy to talk to people who have any particular questions.. The charge for a set-up will be £35 and if you are planning on having one done, please remember to bring your own choice of strings with you on the day!! To get the ball rolling and so Graham knows what amount of work he can expect, it'd be good if people could list their names here or PM me, thanks: Set-Ups List: 01. Silverfoxnik 02. 03. 04. 05. 06. 07. 08. 09. 10. Refreshments: Thanks to Hamster (and with help from Mrs. Hamster), there will be Teas, Coffees and soft-drinks plus a selection of pastries available to buy on the day. For other sustainance, I'm reliably informed that there is a local parade of shops and a Tesco Express or superstore within 5 minutes distance. OK, more to follow... silverfoxnik
OK, more to follow...
And last but not least and with a lot of help from Happy Jack, here's info on The Quiet Room, The Jamming Room and a Garage Sale: QUIET ROOM The plan is to have a "quiet room" down the corridor in the Plaza from the noise-fest in the main hall. No speaker cabs will be allowed, only instruments being played either through headphones or acoustically. This should allow people to: • Try out different headphone/practice devices; • Investigate in-ear monitoring (IEM); • Try DI-ing their bass through a mixer desk; • Listen to how different basses sound when played acoustically; • Play acoustic and semi-acoustic instruments; • Get away from any Marcus Miller soundalike contests; • Give their ears a rest! ********************************** I will be bringing along (at least) the following gadgets: • Gaffa tape • PJB Bass Buddy • Korg Pandora • Rolls PM351 • Eden WTX260 • Eden WTX500 • A decent DI box • More gaffa tape • Alesis MultiMix (unless it sells first, of course) • A microphone + stand (to use with the PM351 and the Alesis) • Some guitar leads (probably not enough) • Some micro-jack micro-jack cables (again, probably not enough) • 2 decent headphones (Sennheiser & Bose) • Probably some extra gaffa tape If you can add to this gadget list, please feel free to bring along anything that lets you play through headphones. For example, it would be good to have a Tascam there too. Remember to bring the power supply! If you want to play through some of these toys, best have your mp3 earphones with you because there probably won’t be enough cans to go around. That’s doubly important if you want to experiment with in-ear monitoring. JAMMING ROOM The plan is to have a "Jamming room" in The Cafe, away from both the main hall and the quiet room. The drummer on the day will be Paul Haydon, who usually plays with Happy Jack. He’s a lunatic, but a friendly one. He’ll be available for a series of sessions throughout the day where players can check how a given bass/rig combination sounds when alongside a real (and very loud) drummer. There’s no particular plan for this to turn into a jam session, and it’s unlikely that there will be many guitars about, but we can be flexible about that. If anyone wants to organise a performance of Big Bottom, please give plenty of notice so that those who wish to can avoid it. The simplest structure would probably be to have 30-minute sessions starting on the hour. Paul will be in the room with his kit, Silverfoxnik will provide some backline so there’s always something to play through, and anyone who wants to play with a drummer can just wander into the room with a bass in their hands. Whether Paul will allow others to use his kit when he’s not there will be entirely up to him. If you’ve enjoyed playing with Paul, just slip him a can of something refreshing to say thanks. Just to say that we've also had an offer from silddx (Nigel) for him to bring his drummer on the day, so there may well be two drummers who can share the worlkoad!! GARAGE SALE Several Basschatters have expressed an interest in bringing along stuff for sale. For example, Happy Jack will have an instrument or two and some PA gear which will be on offer on the day. SELLERS: It probably makes sense to have gear for sale in the quiet room (assuming it’s big enough) but there’s no way that Basschat can provide “security” for this stuff. If you have stuff for sale, but want to move around the Bass Bash rather than be tied to a table (!) then you should consider keeping your stuff locked in your vehicle and putting photo-adverts on a table to show what you brung. If you want to do this but won’t be coming by car, then it may be possible to have another Basschatter lock it in his car for you. Happy Jack should have some spare room during the Bass Bash because the drum kit will be in use. BUYERS: “Will you take a cheque?” is a great line but, realistically, if you think you may want to buy something, bring CASH! OK; that's it for now! Look forward to seeing you all there
Hamster
Great work Nik! Just a couple of extra thoughts about what you all should bring if attending: A multiplug trailing socket and extension lead - because the law of sod means there will be waaaay more amps than sockets! Some earplugs - as your definition of 'loud enough' is an entirely personal perspective! Not long now!!!
xilddx
Wow! This sounds amazing! Great work from those involved in the organising! May I suggest I install my POD X3 Live in the quiet Room? I'll bring headphones in which you get exactly what a mixing desk receives when you DI to it in stereo. I don't think dood ever confirmed he'd demo his, so I'm happy to hang about and show people how to get around using it.
Merton
Good work Nik! One thing to mention, the raffle is looking a little thin on the ground at the moment, so more donations please! You're right about the Raffle though Mert; must have a look and see what I've got to throw into the mix! Thanks also silddx (Nigel) re the POD X3 Live; that will add even more interest to what looks like a really brilliant idea for The Quiet Room! Not long to go now!
If my Bass POD xt Pro is back from Line6 service (the pedal board out got fritzed somehow) then I can bring that along for the quiet room with the associated pedal board 9it may even have a For Sale sign on it I can also bring along my IEM rack (db Technologies) if anyone were to be interested in trying. Bring your own headphones as you would not want to use my sweaty betty set and as they are ear canal types it's probably not hygienic anyway. To see what its like properly it might be worth having that in the jamming room so you can see what its like when playing in a semi live situation with other instruments going on around you - a better tryout than in a quiet room with nothing but the gentle clank of basses being played through headphone amps to contend with. IEM's are a different way of monitoring and can leave you feeling isolated in a gig situation.

It's still not an exact reproduction of a band situation, since it'll just be the drums and bass (probably), but it'll be better than nothing. I think I'll bring my Epiphone Valve Junior and put that in the jamming room just in case anyone brings along a guitar.
Happy Jack
Another perennial topic on Basschat is straps for really heavy basses, or for people with back problems. I'll bring along a Comfort Strapp, a Dare twin-shoulder strap, and a Slider twin-shoulder strap and people can see how they get on with them.
