I've never seen one of these before - Ibanez Precision copy with P/J pups & maple board/pearl block inlays. Non-serial neckplate dates it to 1975 or earlier. It's been slightly modded - the pups are non-original (think they're Reflex Reds), it's had an additional volume or tone control added, and (annoyingly) the output's been moved to the side of the body.

Anyroad up, it's an Ibanez 2369B-W, which first popped up around '73 or '74:

And at the moment it's at a massive £51, on a 3-day listing, with 2 days left to run.

So someone buy it, OK? Cos I can't!

Jon.
Err... Why?

J.
It's a lovely looking bass but it looks like they started enthusiastically at the bottom strap button but once they got beyond the nut...

Do the pickups not seem bizarrely far apart?

Anyway, I bet she sounds lush and I'm lovin' the block inlays :) *lick*
I'm thinking of bidding for this one. If any other BC type also wants to bid, please send me a PM first so we don't end up bidding each other out of sight.
£113? :)

Excellent score, Mr Jack - cheapest vintage Ibanez ever (apart from that LP I missed!) and by a bizarre coincidence, these are being discussed over on the Ibanez Collectors site:

Interesting snippet of info about Tetsu Yamauchi & his involvement with the design, too. :)

Bass arrived, sorted, and played.

She scrubbed up really well, enough damage to count as mojo but in pretty good shape for a 33-year-old "cheap Japanese copy". Weighs a ton, plays like a 60's pre-CBS Fender, built of quality components - would you believe a flamed maple fretboard? - and a truly GREAT neck.

The two (why?) tone controls do absolutely nothing. Everything else works.

The only real downer is the pickups. Currently poorly mounted, which doesn't help, but the output is pathetic. I played it against my teacher's Squier J-bass today; his bass set to 3 matched mine set at full-on. In their day those were good pickups, and with everything set to 11 they do growl really nicely, so I'm a bit puzzled as to why they're so completely gutless. The wiring all checks out fine.

I'm not planning to play this thing on stage - far too heavy for a gentleman of my advanced years - so the output issue isn't really such a problem for me, but I'll probably have to get it sorted at some point.

All in all, a really excellent buy.

Glad to hear it, Jack. :)

I would believe a flamed board - my Ibanez P copy has a gorgeous fretboard & marvellous neck.

Shame the pups don't pass muster, but they're not original anyway, so in my view it just gives you free rein to put whatever you want in to it!

So - any chance of some good pics (the listing ones were terrible!) and if you ever decide to move it on, bags first refusal!

Pics to follow next week. First refusal - I wouldn't have it any other way. Do you ever find yourself in London, Jon?

 • 2 years later...
You still got this Jack?
Nope - sold it to my (then) drummer last year. I liked everything about this bass except the weight. At nearly 13lbs that was the heaviest bass I've ever played and it gave me back-ache after half an hour. I tried playing it sitting down with the bass resting on my thigh ... the weight cut off my circulation and gave me a dead leg. :)

I should add that I did offer Bassassassin first refusal before selling it elsewhere.

Stop reminding me! It's terrible - I couldn't afford that, I can't afford Chris' one, I can't afford your 2366B fretless and I'm too skint to even make an offer on that nice Antoria Jazz that came up last week!

Curse having to buy a new car & not having sold all the basses I don't want any more! :)
