Stingray help

Can anyone give me any advice on how to tell the age of a stingray. The wife is going to buy me a new bass, so we went stingray shopin today. I was just wondering if anyone has any info on serial numbers etc.

Cheers obbm very good site, money should be through by end of month. Not looking for a new one as they are out of my price range. Seen some nice 2nd hand, just wanted to know what I was buying. Anyone else have any pointers (what to look for what to avoid etc) that would be great.

Gavs site is good for information and approximate dating but if you want to research a specific serial number you can also post on this thread:

And the very helpful Dan (5stringer) will dig out the exact information detailing how the bass was when it left the factory and where it went.

Good luck with the hunt I just got a call from my girlfriend that my newly aquired stingray has been delivered to her office (cant resist the urge to post a picture later, got the most amazing birdseye maple neck I've seen)

The one I've been looking at has a birdseye maple neck, it also has a 4 bolt neck joint and a bullet truss rod adjuster. Just waiting for the cash now.
