So, got my new 5-string and have been pottering around with some well known/simple basslines, but their all just using the high 4 - are there any 'oh yeah, that one' basslines that were played (or sound good) on a 5 ?

You're right - great track : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX9C96zwYfQ...ted&search=

Although I think I have many months of learning before I'll be tackling that :)

I don't know if you'd find it much fun because it's pretty simple, but 'Descend The Shades Of Night' by Machine Head is in B, one of the nice simple tunes I've been using to learn for the moment.

If I think of songs with clear 5-string bass, the first band that comes to mind is Living Colour. Especially the Stain album with Doug Wimbish, songs such as Ignorance Is Bliss, and Auslander.

ps: here's some Bach on a 5-string, but there's a catch... :)

LOL!!! awesome banjo riffage!!

Anyways back to the topic, erm I know someone has already mentioned them but machinehead is fun to play on 5 string, songs:

Machinehead - Imperium

Machinehead - Days turn blue to gray

Then also something a bit heavier:

Amon Amarth - Runes to my memory

Amon Amarth - Death in fire

There you go :)

I started playing 5 string about 2 years ago. The first things i learnt were poppy metal like korn and staind just to get a feel for the weight on the B. They helped with slapping and moving around fatter neck. They are fairly simple songs, but the rythem and timing is quite fun. I would say freak on a leash by korn and its been a while by stained are nice to ease into.

I then started looking at incubus who have some great bass lines for 5 strings, certain shade of green (i think) uses a b.

Apart from that just make your own stuff up, theres a great range for funky slaps and pops with the extra string.

not at all hard but I have been mucking around with bits of Amon Amarth to use the low B on my 6er:

The first tune I played on a five string was "Righteous and the Wicked" by the Chilis.

Although you'll very rarely see Flea with anything more than 4 strings he used a 5 string for this song as well as "Funky Monks" but then again he was out of his tits on drugs for most of the recording of BSSM
