Saul T. Nads
First post, so please be gentle I'm a singer/songwriter/guitarist and have been asked to join a band as....................bassist! Long story, so I'll cut to the chase We'll probably be doing mostly pubs and clubs, and my question is this: Would you recommend a head and cab(s) or a combo? And what sort of wattage do you think I would need to be heard? Cheers! ps I have a bass already - I record my own compositions
niceguyhomer
Separates are best IMHO and the volume you need depends on what sort of music you're playing. Others will say different but for most pubs etc I'd be looking for 300watts minimum.

alexclaber
Lots of bargains in here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=20 Unless you really know what you want it's safer buying your first rig used as you can then move it on without much loss if it turns out to be unsuitable. steelman
Hi Saul.. As above. I was in your position 6 months ago. I bought a used 180W combo which is OK for rehearsals but Its struggling to keep up in many gig situations. Its also bloody heavy for where we rehearse, down and, later up, a long flight of steps. I would echo seperates ( it gives you more options as time goes by) and is ( slightly ) lighter. 300W should be more than enough. C

Bill Fitzmaurice
Be it used or new buy the best quality head you can afford, so as not to outgrow it in short order. Probably the most versatile cab configuration is the 2x10. One will cover the smaller gigs, two just about anything. 8 ohm 2x10 is the best option, so that you may run two with almost any amp, and as many as four with some.
