KASH
Ok, here's a few basses I've got on my GAS list. All affordable, but can only buy one So, I'm looking for tons of low end bassiness (there's a new expression for ya ) A good hard rock/metal machine Here's the list: Yamaha BB414 Epiphone Thunderbird (by the way does the Gothic, having a mohogany body, sounds different from the std?) Spector Legend (2nd hand...I'll buy the other two 2nd hand as well if i find a good deal) There's more...as you can imagine , but for now, I have these three in mind. Haven't tried any of them yet, must say, just looking for opinions at this stage Cheers

BB3000S
I've been thoroughly impressed by a Yamaha BB414's I once met, plus I'm a Yammie fan, so that would be my first bet as I've yet to try out your other two options. However, if you have the opportunity to land a 2nd hand Spector in good condition and the cash is burning a hole in your pocket, just go for it! Once the next GAS-attack sets in and you're looking to sell it (that day comes sooner or later for most of us) you'll be glad you bought it used. Good luck! Funnily enough, I bought mine off of Teaser360...he's obviously missing his! In all seriousness, the active eq really does the biz - very versatile. BB3000S
Call me old school and superficial, but I prefer the more 80's correct looks of the BB414 to the BB614 with its fancy 3band eq. That said, with Mumbles87 BB up for grabs it'd be a no-brainer for me - I'd most likely jump on it. The 80's BB's did get the 3band eventually... In case you missed it, here's a BP-review on the two. KASH
I see the BB614 have lots of points! lol ...unfortunately I'm not a big fan of active basses, hence the BB414 as my 1st choice. How about the other options?

How about the other options?
...and a big thumbs up to you, dear Sir. Don't have much input (and none with much substance) on the other two, but my gut feeling would rank them 1) Yammie, 2) Spector, 3) Epiphone, with a Tokai T-bird as a wild card. WHUFC BASS
Personally I'd go for the Spector - the Epiphone Thunderbird is just nasty. I've had a Gibson Thunderbird and an Epi and to be honest, apart from the shape, the two basses couldn't be more different. Different woods, different construction, different sounding pickups, different neck measurements, different weight etc. You can't go wrong with a Spector although having said that Yamaha do make nice basses. RussFM
Yep, Spector all the way. A Legend Custom (or Euro if I come into some money!) is next on my list. A Classic went on ebay for under £200 the other day.

I spent a couple of hours setting mine up, and it plays like a dream, and handles as well as the Gibson T-Birds I have played, with the added advantage that I don't give a flying toss if I bump it during the gig, its the perfect hard gigging bass, and I want another one if its the right price. True, the pickups are a little uneven, couple of dead spots, but I'm using that particular bass for high energy NWOBHM, so it's all a bit academic really, and I'm slinging EMGs in it at some point. Having said that, do NOT buy a Thunderbird without trying it on a strap for at least 10 minutes (as testified by the number of "1 month old" T-birds on Ebay) loads of people bought them on a whim, then found they can't handle the position and the neck dive, despite the killer looks. PS: Yamahas are great but extremely unfashionable. Spector might be your best bet off that list especially if you want to keep good resale value. I would say that if you want a cheap(er) Thunderbird but much better quality than Epiphone and sounding just like the original then go for a Greco or Oville Thunderbird if you can. The Orvilles use Gibson pickups and sound just like the real thing. The neck dimensions are the same and it actually is identical to a Gibson in every way. The Greco is slightly different in that it has a two-piece brdige but sounds great.
