As part of the planning obligations attached to the construction of the new campus, the College was required to acquire the Lower Lines and the land to the East; to design and construct a park there; at a total cost of close to £7 million. The park is being designed by RPS and will comprise of repairs to the Lower Lines and opening them up to the public; a large woodland area; a central glassed plateau and two children’s play areas. Medway is applying for World Heritage Site status for the dockyards and the surrounding areas, including the Lower Lines. This park is a key component of the bid and needs to be seen as a good quality, well managed park that is an asset to a potential World Heritage Site. The College is setting up an independent trust to own and operate the park. This trust will be a company limited by guarantee with seven trustees (each of whom will also be a member – a part owner of the trust. At present four trustees, including the chair have been appointed directly by the college. John Spence OBE, DL – chair, Lindsay Morgan, Jane Jones and Eileen Bartlett. In future all appointments, all appointments will be made by the Trust but the college will retain the right to agree to three of the appointments, Medway Council will agree one and English Heritage will agree one. A well established local “friends” group for the park exists – The Friends of the Admiral’s Garden. They are a non-political group. corr Kelly Osbournes gona be there.
