Pete Academy
I've just seen the review of the new Spector Doug Wimbish signature bass in BGM. Looks a great bass, but how much?! £2400 for a Czech-made instrument? No disrespect to the makers but I paid a bit less for my Roscoe SKB-5 (OK, the pound/dollar rate was a bit better) hand-built in the USA, and with a much higher spec. Imagine a UK-built custom bass you could get for that price.
Rowbee
Pricing aside, I saw one at the Wimbish\Calhoun gig a few months back in Leamington and it's an absolute beauty.
molan
Was that a list price or a genuine 'street' value? £2,400 must be pretty close to what you could get a US made Spector for?

Sean
And here they are a bit less but the prices do seem strong when you consider how similar they are to a standard Euro 4LX. TDM
That seems slightly OTT. For over 2k I'd expect higher grade maple on the wings.
thisnameistaken
Does anybody know what gear Doug was playing on the old Sugarhill Records stuff? That's the sound I'd want, if I was a big Doug Wimbish fan, and I can't imagine it was all that sophisticated.
Sean
Doug 's gear is listed here. As I understand it, that Doug Wimbish sound comes from EMG pickups and Trace Elliott amps. Doug's technique has a huge bearing on his sound though and he still sound exactly like Doug if he was thumping a Precision through a B-15. NancyJohnson
Years and years ago (before I knew anything about Doug Wimbish), I distinctly remember seeing an article in a US Guitar magazine - he was holding a Spector bass, but the finish was just amazing. It was a transparent colour finish in dozens of colours over a maple top. Never seen it since. Now that was lovely. These signature editions don't look anything different to the standard editions (Gary will probably say otherwise)...it does seem a little over the top $$$.
