I think you're referring to 6stingbassists Sei 6 (every time I clicked the link I was taken to a different but gorgeous Sei) - that's a stunning bass! I've not tried midi with bass for many years (and back then, the triggering was poor) - I'm sure Martin could sort something out. Weirdly enough, the acoustic bass that appears in one of the photographs with 6stringbassists Sei is with me now - what an incestuous world Basschat is! Oh, and it started life as a fretless but was fretted by Martin - one of the most stunning jobs I've seen - he retained the original rosewood binding and it's entirely unmarked. I don't want to turn this into my personal for sale thread, but the acoustic is for sale too (please drop me a PM if you're interested - it's cheap!) PS...i really dothink ABS make the best bridges of all of them.just superb..there is no direction i cant adjust my strings...[/quote] I've played this bass as well - I was in the shop when Gwilym was there actually - and it's a great bass, my [url="http://www.munkio.com/visions/seijazzbass.html"]Sei Jazz[/url] was still being built at the time so it was great to have a go on a worn in one and really get an idea of how they sound and play. Having got my Jazz since I can only echo your comments - I've gigged mine a few times now and the tone is just extraordinary - I keep playing lines and little melodic fills and actually play less notes as the ones I do play sound so sweet! It's also a beast for Jaco-style finger work, it really honks - a fellow bassist come to my last gig on the weekend and commented how good it sounded - and I wasn't even going through the PA... I still love my single cut and play that a lot too but Sei Jazz's are pretty special that's for sure... "I wouldnt give up this bass for any AC" - odd comment when he hasn't even seen an AC. Just an observation. Either way it's a great looking instrument and plays real nicely [/quote] just thought i would chime in on this one, i bought the bass pictured below from Paul about 4 or so years ago directly, it was according to Martin the 1st/2nd Sei jazz bass ever made as Paul is the reason why the sei jazz even exists, he ordered 2 "prototypes" from Martin around 2000 the sister bass is a fretted 5 and is now owned by Corrine Bailey Rae's bass player (i forget his name) the reason i say its the 1st/2nd is because they were finished in the same week. the bass has done quite a few world tours and loads of gigs with Annie Lennox and has been on an album of hers, i loved it and gigged it at least 3 times a month, the "dent on around the 2nd position on the side of the fingerboard happened when it got knocked over by a clumsy drummer, about the wear, i don't remember it being really bad but it did have a lot of little nicks and scuffs, and the finish was looking a little dull. I gave the instrument a good buffing up before i sold it which made it sparkle almost like new which might explain why you havnt noticed many marks. if your wondering why i sold her i bought a beautiful 79" fretless stingray that has completely blown me away, its actually having a new fingerboard fitted by Martin at the moment, she should be finished in about a week. I thought somebody had knicked my bass - imagine my surprise when scrolling through this thread and seeing what looked exactly like my bass staring back at me Thanks for all the info. Dave. Obviously unless there are two near identical basses out there, this would seem to be the one I recently bought from the gallery and yes I noticed the small ding on the neck and one on the headstock. But apart from these it appears to be in amazingly good shape after all it's done. I feel a little bit of a fake owning such an instrument after reading about it's history. Those fret markers where the maple is on the side of the neck and ebony (if I recall from a previous post by you) on the front are a really fantastic idea. The maple stands out beautifully and makes such a nice feature. Anyway, thanks again for the info. Surprised by this as Martin was talking about one in '93 or whenever he moved to Camden from Queens Park... can't quite recall the date. He knew all about Sadowsky's Fenders then ( of course ) and even had one in his shop...which wasn't that great, IMV, as I recall. However, getting someone to commission one..or two, as in this case, would be the driver behind it. Also at that time he was just taking on a new builder as he was getting so much work that he was maxed out at 30-40 basses pa, being built.
