Pete Academy
Once again I bought Bass Player mag and once again, apart from a Christian McBride feature, there's nothing of interest to me. Less pages, same adverts, same price. Someone wrote in bemoaning this, and the answer was 'blame it on the economy'. They said there was loads of stuff to read on their website, but that sounds like a cop out to me. I'd hate to stop buying BP, and I'd hate to see it go down the pan, as I've been a supporter for many years, but it looks like I'm going to have to check it out properly in the store before deciding to buy it. The last two issues I could have read in Smith's in 5 mins. Compared to BGM with it's (relatively minor) faults, I'm afraid our publication wins hands down. alexclaber
I'll have to have a look at BP mag again. It used to usually be very good - the last issue I bought had the chap from Phish on the cover, Mike Gordon that's it, and something about some new British bass cabs on the inside, hence the purchase - and that seemed a good read. I've haven't looked at BGM since the same month, be interested to see if it's improved. Am happy to offer my services on spelling and grammar if they still haven't got the hang of that! I recently bought the pdf back issues of the confusingly titled Bass Gear Magazine (not to be confused with Bass Guitar Magazine) and apart from a slight air of pretentiousness and trying to hard it's actually rather good - much better when printed out rather than trying to read it onscreen. They really do put the T for Tech in their Tests! I stopped buying BP every month after realising that JPJ was in it at least once a year and he just ended up paraphrasing everything he'd said in previous interviews. And then realising I wasn't taking any new ideas, knowledge or inspiration from most issues. I guess that happens to all of us after a while, it gets harder and harder to find the nuggets when you've spent so many years searching... lozbass
I've got to be honest, I find both magazines rather poor (content, journalism, tests etc.) and come to Basschat, Talkbass and brand-specific sites for informed opinion and advice. I wasted a little over 5 minutes reading BP is Smiths last week and a little more than that on BGM (the latter had more pages but little more appeal). JTUK
Had a quick look in one the other day and it had hardly anything for me.... Obviously, I am outside its core-market so I don't bother..

urb
Obviously I'm biased - but all I'll say is I like the Bass Player website - both the video one and the mag one - they put so much of the content up there for free I haven't felt inclined to buy the mag for ages... can't remember the last time I did. yorick
BP, 72 pages, a third of which are adverts.. AND it's gone up in price. Utter tosh. Not read BGM for yonks, so can't comment.
Doddy
Both mags have been a bit hit and miss lately, but I still think that Bass Player is a better Publication. I think that the stories and interviews are generally better and especially the lessons are better in BP...with the obvious exception of Janek's Column. I'll continue to buy both though. Marvin
Picked up BP in Smiths the other day and thought someone had pinched half the pages or that it was an advertising pamphlet. It's a lot of cash for not a lot of substance IMO. BGM it's alright.
RhysP
There's very rarely enough of any interest to me in either publication to make me hand over the cash for them. I can go for long periods of time, sometimes years, without seeing a copy I think is worth buying.
