Congratulations! I see myself heading down the jaydee road eventually, in large part thanks to this thread and the jaydee porn one. :)

Oh my, 12 lbs is pretty hefty. I have two Fender J's in ash that weigh in at 11 lbs, and they do get heavy after a wile standing.

My ideal bass weight is 9-10 lbs, would a Seriess II/III be likely to land in that region? Then again, weight isn't a real dealbreaker - at 1.88m I'm a pretty big guy too so I wouldn't want a really small bass body either. How does the Series III body compare to a classic Alembic for instance?

Is sound characteristics very different between the three series?
The Series II and III weigh about the same and the weight is around 9-10 lbs. As far as comparisons from the Series III to the Alembic, you may want to ask the Doc(Nick) about that. I would think for sure that the Alembic would be consideribly heavier and cost much more than the Jaydee.

My Series 2 weighed loads more than 10 lbs, more like 12 or 13, so be careful! In fact both my JDs were heavier than my 2 Alembics.
Hi folks, I know i'm probably entering a competition here, but if anyone sees or hears of a Jaydee for sale (higher spec than my Roadie 2A) please PM me, I am looking myself, but if you stumble upon one, please let me know.

Andy
Competition???!! Nah! Not here*! You will find that we are all caring, sharing individuals who are more than willing to help each other when it comes down to GAS!

*he says, tongue firmly in cheek!!!!

Seriously. I'm always scouring the land for said erotica, er, I mean exotica - If I find anything, I will buy it, er let you know!!!

Re - weights - all depends on each individual bass - the Alembics I've got both weigh a ton, much heavier than a Series II or III JD - but then my Series I JD is a very heavy bass! Must be all that lovely wood!

unsure just yet, thinning out the collection. See what i get, then make a decision.
For a lad of 25 i've got pretty arthritic finger joints on my right hand, and i'm unsure what my next musical step is.
I think a nice custom jaydee for mucking about may keep me going.
I really have to see though...cheers for the support mate.

Mate - you will be fine espec with a finely crafted custom John Diggins bass. I've got a spur of bone on one of the joints of my first finger on my right hand and some days, I can't move it (which can be an issue when music pays your mortgage) so I kind of know where you are at. Eat loads of fruit etc and don't worry about it - only problem then is wind!

Hey mates.....Check this out. I came across this photo of a new Jaydee being painted in blue. NOTE the recessed area below the neck. This is obviously a new modified 'funk groove' that someone ordered. Here's the link with the photo:

Greetings Nick,

You may know about this already but I've found a pic of one of John Diggin's creations currently being built. Note the inlaywork. Look familiar? Here's the link:

This next pic totally took me by suprise. Look at this new 'funk groove' that's been ordered on this pearl blue Jaydee as it sat in the paint booth. Here's that link:

Hi there,

Those pics aren't current. They're very old !!! (like me).

I took them around '98/99/00 I think (fuzzy now!) with my first digital camera. The first pic is from John & Andy's old workshop.

Ignore the exif data - I don't know why it says April 09 - must have been when I last edited them.

Cheers, Nick.

(And a big hi to Nick! I keep popping up randomly and saying hello don't I?!) !!

Allo!

Great to 'ear from you again Redders! We really must get a reunion sorted!!! (you, Kol, me and Cookie and if we can find 'im, Toby Douglas!). Remember that italian we had in Manchester - I think we spent about £300 on Barolo that night...!

Those pics bring back some memories! Bryan, that pearl blue Mark King model with the unusual funk groove used to belong to our good friend Mick Cookson from Manchester - he originally bought it as what he thought was a Roadie II passive, finished entirely in gloss black (with the funk groove). Anyway, Mick took it to John around 1999 or so and wanted it stripping down to have it redone in `Manchester City' blue. As John got it rubbed down, it was clear that it was not a Roadie but a heavily modified Mark King model, complete with centre stringers in the body. Mick then had John restore it complete with the standard JD 3 band eq etc. I've got a pic of me playing it at the old Bartholomew Street workshop. It now resides in Paris with Morgan Roussell who owns my red ex-King classic bass!

Cheers!

Nick

Aww!

What are you doing Saturday nite?? Heheh!

Thanks mate! Love you too! There's a lot of history out there - when the Net first started, there were many Yahoo clubs for most of the main bass makers (I co-founded the JD one, and setup clubs for Status, Pangborn etc), going back to around '97 - and we actually had quite a few get-togethers, including parties in London etc and of course, the famous JD 25th Anniversary open day in 2001. Yahoo Clubs then changed and they kind of trailed off a bit which was a real shame really.

Awww matey! I'd love a proper catch up some time. We must do it before the last strand of your hair goes and my last black hair goes grey on me.

I feel like we're the old gentlemen of the net reading your old stories ;-) What was that first JD wesbite, before the yahoo group ??? Can't remember the fella's name who put it up.

One day soon - I'll put up some of the video from the 25 year anniversary. Proper pre-Youtube that footage is !!! it's not great, so I'll have to edit the best bits out. I think I might just have sunk way too many Jack Ds at the JD !!!! (Some things never change).

You just reminded me about Cookie's Man City bass too !! Mental.

I've got a bunch of those old pics on Flickr, if anyone wants a look - they're at : -

looks excellent buddy like the look of that three pickup jaydee...
Ive decided that im going to have a jaydee made next year im either going to go one way or another with it, either stay witht the classic jaydee look of a series 1 in white or of course cherry red :) love it my dad has one and i also have a 1980 jaydee roadie active 2 which is one of two in the world with a cetral stripe so i am informed the other one is on a jaydee leaflet the only difference on that one is it has a squared body like my dads series 1 and mark kings cherry red jaydees's

the other direction which i am considering taking is to get a series 4 jaydee with a quilted maple top. 32 inch scale front leds and then get side ones added later...a custome string spacing between 16.5mm which i loved on the kingbass mk2 and that of a jaydee or jazz bass which is 19 so 17 would be great. And i might get stars on the neck not too sure yet aswell as getting the top stained red whilst leaving the sides and back natural....sounds excellent

has anyone got any pictures of the series 4?

X

Amazingly, all my grey hair has disappeared! Problem is so has all the rest!!! We are certainly the old boys now eh - I'm 39 at Christmas!

We will definitely have to have a get together with all the old crowd! The guy who started the JD yahoo club was called Paul Theriault, from Canada. The other JD site which I think came out just after the Club was built by Ralph Van Hejden (Ralphie!) from Holland - and its still available, all these years later!
I am about to pull the trigger. At the moment it seems Jaydee is a good bass for that money. I got Mark King mkI in my mind. What you think, worth of money ++ or just one "good" bass or just leave it and save for Alembic?
Allo!

Its a personal thing - build-wise they (JD and Alembic) are very similar - now that JD's are `one-offs' as opposed to semi-production models, the attention to detail is excellent, only thing might be the waiting list! Let us know what you decide!

Cheers!

Thank's Doc. I am this close to order one. I already have one CB (6 string fretless) and one handmade Jazz bass. I love them bought. This Jaydee looks so good and I am after a good slap bass. The quality looks great and the price is more than reasonable. It is like an Alembic with 1/5 the price. I am waiting for an answer from Jaydee and then I will order one. I think Mark King MKI is the right choise for me.
One q, which nut you prefer - Standard or Brass nut and then whats the difference between standard brass nut and brass roller nut?
The standard nut is white plastic I think, the brass roller nut has two tiny ball bearings inset into it in the slot for the G string - I used to own Mark King's red JD (the one on the Live at Wembley dvd) and that had such a nut - nice for doing the string bends behind the nut!
