Gust0o
I've had to admit that slap and tap will never be for me, as per the above. They have uses, I just simply haven't found them yet - which is probably natural when your bass playing involves noodling about at home and the odd jam/gig with mates. If we do Basschat meet oop North I'll pop along to allow someone to cure me of my ills, in this respect.

Marvin
I used to use a pick but can't get along with them anymore. It feels alien. Agree with some of what Bilbo said about beginners getting off the mark.

I use a pick as I cannot play my band's fast-paced punk music (loads of 16th notes) with my fingers. I would like to be equally adept at finger-style but I have a hell of a long way to go. How Steve Harris keeps up the pace I have no idea (whether or not he uses compression or whatever), ditto Geezer B
Small caveat to my original post. I didn't actually mean to give the impression that my fingers were any good, it's just that I'm absolutely useless with a pick these days. So in fact I'm shafted -oh bugger
