How loud do you need?

28 years ago I needed 100w (Marshall Superlead) to be heard in a band

23 years ago I needed 150w (Laney PB150)

17 years ago 250w (H&K BassBase 250 combo)

13 years ago 500w (the above x2)

7 years ago 850w (H&K BassBase 600 @ 2ohms)

2 years ago 1000w (Tech Soundsystems Black Cat OR a pair MB amps)

Presently... 500w (Thunderfunk) and to be quite honest I'd bet I could manage with a lot less given what I know about amps, cabs, cab positioning and PA

And does the 500w now weigh less than the 100w did then?

We had support from an excellent band called The Jaccals last week end. Bass player had a Roland Cube 100 running an Ashdown 4x8. Plenty loud enough to compliment one crazy guitarist with AC30 and manic drummer.

I'm with warwickhunt on this one most of the way...

36 years ago HH 100w, 2x12, Vox AC50 1x15

34 years ago Marshall superlead, Hiwatt 100, acoustic 370 bass bin, 4x15 (what it was to be young and strong)

30 years ago Hiwatt 200 1x15 (homebuilt and I didn't blow the speaker)

then at the time a good choice traded the Hiwatt (heavy) for a peavey 130W bass combo (lighter when I was younger). At that time you could not give Hiwatts away - how times change. Not a good decision with hindsight, I can't convince swmbo that a Maxwatt or Reeves 200 is now needed :!
Peavey did gigs of up to 600+ with 150W PA support for vocals only for about 28 years.

So now that speakers are much more efficient (I've just got one of Alex's big ones :)) and PAs provide KWs what has changed that 5,6, 7, 1K watts bass rig is needed? Not being provocative or ironic here, just interested - its time to buy a new amp as the Peavey BW bass combo gave up - the glue on the speaker failed after 28 years & it has no secondhand value. (I have had my money from it after 28 years, 1000s of gigs, zero failures, I switched it on, it sounded excellent to OK depending on venue, it dealt with Fender, Gibson, Rickenbacker, John Birch, G&L, Double bass and Gibson ES175)

Do I go for a Hartke LH1000 or a 1000W poweramp and pre or a Markbass or fire up the sound city 120 after a service? or what?

aged and deaf (if these watts are needed) but liking lightweight gear

18 years ago I had a Peavey TNT160 = 150w

15 years ago Trace 7210H = 150w on its own?

14 years ago Trace 7210H & 1048H = 200w through 6 10" speakers

11 years ago Gallien Krueger 800RB, Peavey 410TVX & Trace 1153 = 300w

8 years ago Hartke Ha5500 & Behringer Ba410 = 4 million watts if Behringer are to be believed - realistically = 360w

6 years ago ashdown Evo something or other & 2x BM115s = 575w (I think - but so wooly that only fish at the bottom of the ocean could hear it)

2 years ago Gallien 700RB II & Schroeder 1212L = 480w

9 months go Genz Shuttle 6.0 & same Schroeder = 600w

Now - Trace V-type combo = 180w as a monitor or 250w with a 2103H for use with no pa support

I had a Hiwatt 200w and Hiwatt 2x15 cab in the late seventies and remember selling the whole rig for about £90 - mind you that was about two weeks wages after tax.

The £90 paid for a car.

I am running a 500w MB head through orange cabs, only play pub gardens/halls etc, I dont need all the volume at all, but find I do need the set up to get a good tone and punch at lower settings as I have borrowed smaller lighter cabs and ran lower powered heads, but it did provide what I was craving

I am sure the tech experts will explain an easier way of doing this, but it works for me at the mo
