If the chrome is still intact pay a visit to Halfords or a local car spares/accessory shop and get a tube of Solvol Autosol.
I used to use it for car restoration. Alternatively Duraglit wadding is excellent if you can find it in a hardware shop.

Solvol Autosol is good but take care not to overdo it as it can remove the chrome over time.

A milder alternaltive is toothpaste, and it smells better. Can't hurt to give it a try. Cheap toothpaste (an abrasive) is best.

chrome can thin out...its just a coating
i would laquer after getting the shine back

solvol autosol does aluminium and most metals

plating is a different story so go easy
