bassatnight
Hello There, Personally I don't think you can wrong with one of the Squire packages for a beginner. I got my son a Squier P and he loves it. Cheers, Steve.
Hi Guys i recently introduced myself on the Intro page. I'll recommend what I always recommend for a beginner - Vintage V4 - an excellent bass at the price point - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/1423...tage-white.html
Cat Burrito
I agree on the Squier range - it's what I started on 21yrs ago! There are a lot of good budget basses out there. My advice is pick one that feels right to you. Owning a musical instrument is a deeply personal thing (especially the first one) so take your time and go with what you like the look and feel of. chrisba
+1 on the Squier P . One got me from never having picked up a guitar in my life, to gigging in decent sized pubs. To be honest, if I hadn't had a few quid burning a hole in my pocket, I'd still be using it now. Doesn't get envious glances or start deep conversations about relative merits of different types of pickups, but sounds like a bass should, plays like one should and looks like one should. A professional, who plays with one of the best known tribute bands in the world, played it and said it was the "amazingly good for a budget guitar". Also, as it's a popular beginners choice, there are quite a lot on the market. See eBay.
OldGit
To minimise your financial loss buy used ...... I can't really agree with the Squier starter pack. You get a fairly average bass - the lowest quality of the various types of Squier available - and an amp that's hardly good enough for bedroom parent worrying, let alone playing with someone else. if you do decide to go that way then look in your local free ads paper for one that some kid has given up on. Those amps also come up in Cash Converter etc for about a tenner so you could buy a decent bass and one of those little amps so you can hear yourself to get started then buy a decent combo when you have a bit more money. For the same bass money you'd get a decent used Squire Vintage Modified Jazz bass or that Classic Vibe Precision bass linked above. Either of these will sell for the same money when you are ready to move on. They are of such quality that they may be good enough for the first few years of your playing (say 10 or 20 if you stay out of the basschat basses for sale section ) Then save up about £100 or so for a decent sized bass combo that will at least see you through your first jams with mates and smallish gigs Get 100 watts or so. There's loads to choose from. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=60062 http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=49254 Also you shoud get a few lessons to get going so ask the tutor as they often have basses for sale, or know of students with basses for sale. oh and good luck, 'tis a mighty path you have chosen Edited September 10, 2009 by OldGit
Mr.T
I haven't ever played a Vintage, but would definately recommend a Squier VMJ. Excellent value and perfectly giggable! Some great deals to be had on this forum.

(but then that goes for all basses) http://www.gamlinsmusic.co.uk/musical-inst...-sunburst-1191/ Dusty Pink one one ebay right now with bag and stand etc. Item 220475602652 Edited September 10, 2009 by OldGit
simon1964
+1 to the Squier and Vintage suggestions. Both safer bets than the two you've suggested. Within your budget you can get some decent stuff - especially if you buy used on here. Look out for some of the cheaper Yamaha and Ibanez models. Consistently good quality. simon1964
For £150 this looks like a cracking buy. Nothing to do with me, by the way! Good example of the value you'll get buying used though.
