So, with my E series MIJ Sunburst precision and the Westone Thunder III gone, I'm left with these 3, which to be honest is probably enough anyway!

Squier JV precision - the date on the neck and the little plastic fender shim is April 83, although as it's a solid colour, I suspect it was produced May 83 on. This is the one I've been having pickguard problems with. It's sort of alright at the minute, having heated it up with the iron, squashed it and then snapped a bit off (which I've taped back together). I've not found a replacement pickguard that fits (the USA ones might, but don't have the holes for the thumbrest) so I may get a Sims one made up - although it's the best part of 50 quid - gah! Anyway, here it is - it's bloody lovely, great neck and in great nick to boot.

I bought this when I decided that I couldn't afford a stingray - 2004 S1 Precision. I don't think the S1 switch warrants being on there, but never mind eh!

Then I bought this when I realised that I could afford it after all. Imported from the States, before tax it was less (shipped) than the Black precision - another 100 quid in duty, but it was well worth it.

JV's were apparently made out of USA parts that had been shipped out to Japan to speed up the construction process. It's got an "EX" stamp on the neck which I understand means Export, although whether this means the part was for Export to Japan or Export from Japan as a complete guitar once it had been made, I have no idea. It is nice though - the neck's better than my old E series precision and it sounds as good as the modern USA one I've got.

Cracking collection-the JV is the same colour/pickguard config as the MIJ Fender P I had years ago-I ordered one in all black and that was what turned up. I wasn't too happy and when I asked in the shop if it was possible to change the pickguard, they just said 'no'. In my naivety I believed them and just got used to it, until I sold it when my last band folded. The USA P is the same as my current one which I love to bits, but I agree the S-1 thing is as much use as a snake in an arse-kicking contest. I've never been a big one for Musicman basses-I just don't like that oval pickguard-but it looks good in black. Black/maple basses rule!

Three black basses is definitely not over the top John and your 3 are great examples!! Nothing wrong with a themed collection of basses either... As Deep Thought points out the black/maple is a really cool combination!

oh yeah well don't get me wrong, it's probably a really good bass, i just think a lot of people won't see past the squier logo. I LOVE your other 2 basses btw, i'm currently torn myself between a stingray or a precision (i'm looking at a sandberg tho, since i like the idea of the musicman pickup) in those exact colours, 'board and all for my next purchase in a few years :)

The S1 switch does bugger all in my opinion. It's supposed to make a P sound like a Jazz, if you believe what Fender write anyway. The oval pickguard, the control plate and the 3+1 tuners are what I like about the 'ray - and the sound of course! I have a black/maple tele custom too!

EdwardHimself - I think you're right, I think there are plenty of people who will see it as a starter bass because they won't see past the Squier Logo (despite the really early ones being marked up with Fender logos and Squier badges), although that doesn't matter to me really - I'm happy with it, it plays and sounds great and is as well made as (if not better than) my USA P.

edit oh, yeah - I'd love a Sandberg as well, although I prefer their Basic range to the other stuff they do. I don't know whether I'd go for a 2H version or just a single humbucker, but they sound great and of course they're active/passive too.
