Jerry_B
Eric, do you play with a plectrum or with fingers? I ask as people often leave this detail out when describing string sounds, despite the big difference to the way it affects things... cocco
Hold it right there!!! I think yours is a '79, Toaster?? I have now started to re-string all mine (when they need doing) both toaster and blade. In the past on the 40, I have used Rotosound, Stadium Elites, Martin and D' Addario. Stuck a set of Picato 735 LHY on one of my Toasters, also a 79 and . . . . .WOW!!! I have used up the six sets that I bought and have another 10 sets on the way. I am using these on almost everything now. Where;s the catch??? There isn't one!! Great strings, great feel, great tone, equal balance across all four strings and . . . . . . les than £8 a set!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brings out a real "punch, bark and growl" Click on the link below. Stringmail I'll post a pic of mine later. Cheers.
Maybe Ill try that. Im gonna be pretty annoyed if I prefer them to the rotosound strings Ive used for the last 4 years as I just got a Rotosound artist deal mind. Does it not stand to reason though that Id get even more growl out of a rail? Mine is indeed a 79 toaster. Maybe I should just save for a rail one, not sell mine A/B the 2 then decide which i prefer. Oh the possibilities..........
allighatt0r
I've just scored this T-40 off of eBay Picking it up on Sunday! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...#ht_4642wt_1048 However! It's had the switches replaced at some time in it's life. Does anyone know how I can get my hands on some original switches (the paddle shaped ones, not the bat shaped ones). Yes, this is a cheeky way of me asking if anyone has any going spare!
cocco
Both mine are none original. Makes no difference at all to anything really.

Seller said there was 90 people watching (this might have been a fib though!). Thanks for the link to the switches! Now, how on earth do you order from that site? Jerry_B
At a guess, try an e-mail? You can also try asking for spares here - I've just ordered some bits from there. Time to spread the word If you get stuck, I have some switches - I'll find out how much they were and I'll PM you. Eric, do you play with a plectrum or with fingers? I ask as people often leave this detail out when describing string sounds, despite the big difference to the way it affects things... Fingers, my good man - We'll have no plectrums here!! Thumb resting on the corner of the back pick-up ring. Perfect. I'm off to dig out my '79 and take a pic, as this is Gear Porn that we are hogging, perhaps we should put some pictures up! I think I'll start a T-40 thread in Bass Guitars and perhaps we can continue this over there and save this area for it's proper purpose - Your gear as the lens sees it. Cheers. Flat Eric. FlatEric
Hi. Here's my '79. Such a lot of life in this one. Full sound, harmonics all over the place, deep thud when required, bright and snappy when needed. Lovely to play, brings a smile to my face every time I pick it up. This is one of the more rare "Three piecer" bodies. The "fur" background is is a "lend from a friend" - what he has it for, I'm not sure, Mmm? allighatt0r
Well! Here she is! I think this may even be a slightly rare one, I've only ever seen pictures of one more T40 with the two groups of three screws at the top of the pickguard. allighatt0r
I adore it! Brilliant tone. I took out the pickup surround screws and found that they are all different sizes and lengths... weird!!!
hubrad
I took the caps off the tone pots on mine (many moons ago) so they just acted as a gradual coil tap. I also got a few replacement pots as they were a custom taper for the T-40.. might still have them in a deep recess of the Projects Box. Great bass, mine was natural and maple neck. Only sold it as I only played fretless.. maybe should have done the conversion!
perogato
Well, out of my enthusiasm for the beasts, T-40's and T-60's, I have learned quite a bit. The very early ones had a line around the truss rod cover, an 8M serial number and square cases. The line was deleted after they discovered it was too difficult to apply. These are very rare! Cheers. Flat Eric.
That line around the truss rod cover was hand painted because no machine could do the tracing.
FlatEric
This is Jon's (Bassassin) more rare '79 "Three Piecer" and having looked at it, it would appear even more rarer!! If you look at my '79, you can just see the centre section, which is just slightly wider than the string ferrules. Jon's has a much wider center section, which I have never come across before. A very nice looking bass, indeed!! This shot is very well suited to Gear "Porn" - His tittle for the pic is . . . . . . Immo
My new baby. Does the trick. Or two. Or dozen. In fact, it's the most versatile instrument I've ever had. I thought it'll do the "heavy" stuff, but it's very bluesy and funky as well. Totally love it! P.S. The guitars on the wall aren't mine. The photo was taken by previous owner.
