Ou7shined
Looks good to me. The starting price is a bit mean though - MMs will generally sell at market value even with a start of 99p. 725 + p&p is approaching top dollar.
dirtylittleherbert
The last few I've seen have gone for big money, I was hoping to pay around 600 is this unrealistic?
Ou7shined
MM prices go up and down like a $2 whore at the fairground. If you hold back long enough you'll bag a beauty for 600. At the moment 650-750 is about right.
dirtylittleherbert
Cheers for ya help man, are fake MM's a common thing then? Or can I be relatively confident about buying one from ebay? Little bit worrying that this one was only bought 10 weeks ago and now he wants rid of. waynepunkdude
I think the only fake MM I ever saw was the most obvious fake I've ever seen and we got the guy banned IIRC. That one is a thing of beauty.
Delberthot
as long as you can identify a Musicman's features then you're usually ok. Don't think I've ever seen a fake that could have passed as the real thing before. 3 main things are the truss rod adjuster which is a little wheel at the body end, 6 bolt neck join & the bridge has those 2 big bolts next to the G & E saddles. Older ones are different - the originals used 3 bolt neck joins, then the progressed to 4 then 6. The original bridge had mutes, then screws where the mutes would have been, then they went with the bridge that you see in the pic. Most, if not all fakes use a variation of the original bridge but without the mutes. The best place to check is on the EBMM forum - there's a link to a fantastic website that has catalogued all the changes over the years. Well worth a look if you're after a stingray Edited September 13, 2009 by Delberthot
dirtylittleherbert
Cheers for all the help guys, I will end up with a Stingray at some point even if its not this one.

Little bit worrying that this one was only bought 10 weeks ago and now he wants rid of.
One of the first things to look out for is that the bridge is stamped "MusicMan". MM bridges tend to last the lifetime of the bass and are seldom swapped out so 2nd hand ones are rare. If someone has re-badged an OLP for example it stands out a mile if the bridge (and tuners) aren't embossed. Stingrays are a bit "Marmite". I believe mainly because they can sound a little "pinched" when played in a bedroom situation. I find it entirely possible that the guy got it home and found the sound wasn't for him. Maybe he didn't get a chance to put it in a live band situation or record with it because that where they really excel to the max. It's a shame really as he paid £850 for it himself and he's gonna take a quite a hit if this sells. Have you see this? It's not a 100% pure blood but £500 posted is pretty feckin' good.

budget bassist
if you're unsure of if one is real or not, this is a great site to check, run by a member on the EBMM forum and totally up to date. Tells you all the distinguishing features and what year they changed etc (don't be put off if a seller claims it to be a certain year and it doesn't match up with certain characteristics on the site, they may be quoting the year it was bought and it may have just been old stock). Alternatively you can ask for the serial number and get it checked in the serial number thread (stickied) on the EBMM forums.
