Floyd Pepper
Hi Guys, As I'm not experienced with effects, I wondered if those with greater knowledge could help me out. For certain songs and gigs, I'm keen to emulate the 'valve' sound through either my Fender P (passive) or my Lakland DJ4 (active). At the same time, I need to get myself a DI. The EBS Microbass II looks like the one on paper, but just wondered if I should split the job up between an effect and a seperate DI, or both in one box? To give you an idea, the valve sound I'm trying to emulate is the 'Vox' amp sound. I hope I've explained myself properly and all comments welcome. Cheers, FP
AndyTravis
ART do a D.i. Box, with a valve in it, called a TUBE MP V3...i think, and it has different voicings in it, one of which is 'Bass'. Acts as a D.I. and a Valve Pre. They also have the cool VU meter on the front like the Ashdown gear. Under £100. Behringer do the Mic 100, a cheap version of the above for about £40. Without voicing. But a nice thing to play with. Both are versatile bits of kit. But would suit your needs. I know they've both been through patches of poor quality control, but i havent heard anything negative in the last year or so.
johnnylager
Does it have to be valve emulation, or could you look at a valve pedal? They need a PSU and can be bigger, but in my expeience / opinion they sound more, er, valvey. Dave Hall does them with DI out too. Cant comment on the Voxiness though. Floyd Pepper
I could look at a valve pedal and a separate DI but the thought of carrying as little as possible is appealing. FP
Sean
Get one of these  , stop worrying and move on to the next challenge. Nuff said. Oh, hang on... it's a headphone amp as well

The Funk
I've got the EBS Microbass II and the Ampeg SVT-DI (the Ampeg is a valve DI). I much prefer the sound of the EBS (with the speaker emulation switched on) because it sounds like a real amp. I also have the rackmount Aguilar DB680 which has a DI out. I always record with that. I'd ordinarily recommend a valve preamp w/ DI out for the best sound, but if it's just for one or two songs and going to be switched on/off from song to song a pedal might be more your thing. The Ampeg SVT-DI is not that light or small (more than double the EBS).
dannybuoy
I would suggest a DHA VT1-EQ-Drive (which has a DI, headphone amp, etc), or a Sansamp VT Bass combined with a Radial JDI / ProDI.
Floyd Pepper
Thanks for the suggestions. The DHA looks like the biz for me. FP
hookys6stringbass
I'd love a di box with an on board tuner.... That would be great for gear lite gigs, just me the VT bass pedal and me bass....
mikebass78
I've heard that Sansamp fall short in studio situations, has anyone recorded with the EBS MicrobassII or DHA VT1? do you get the same quality or are they a live only tool? Does anyone know where I could trial a VT1, they look great but I'd like to hear one

It's one of the things I'm looking for until I can afford to upgrade my rig, cheers

The emulation sounds sweet, and all it needs is a little compression.
