Joshbasscana
Hey, Just looking at people's opinions of the Ampeg SVT-DI. Interested to know if it can truly re-create the classic full rounded ampeg tone. I'm generally quite interested to know how ampeg make the tone like they do. Is it because of the amount of preamp valves and power amp valves? Circuitry? It's a shame it's discontinued - I would be interested in getting one in the nearby future! Saw one on ebay go recently at £170. Not bad! Anyway, let me your thoughts. Cheers! Josh
KevinJazzBass
Hi Josh, I have an SVT-DI for sale on this very forum. I think they're a great piece of kit but I just cant afford to keep it now that I have an SVT3 Pro. I used to use it to add some tube warmth to the sound of my BA115HP and also for recordings to a great direct bass sound, it worked fantastically. It gives you a tube sound at a fraction of the price and looks great on stage when its all lit up. Kev
iamapirate
it's basically an ampeg preamp, no? So it'll sound identical I'd imagine. Hence why they're so expensive! (speaking in DI terms, that is)
The Funk
it's basically an ampeg preamp, no?
No, it's not. I have one and even though I do like it, it doesn't give me the Ampeg sound that I'm after. For that, I think an Ampeg SVP-CL or SVP-Pro preamp would be ideal. The DI has only one valve and no kind of overdrive. It gives a nice, round, warm, clean sound - not the cranked Ampeg sound.
