I doubt any of these should be a huge problem to come up with a simple bass line that will do. Start simple... just the roots done right is a good start! BigRedX
Just listen to the recordings and play what the bass does. If you can't hear what the bass is doing then make something up that sounds right. Same with the songs that have no bass part on the recording. Just today I was playing in front of about 500 people (@ my church) and the worship leader went into a song we hadn't got music for and builded up straight away and so the drummer (being both female and a drummer) built up and went quite heavy into the chorus. i worked out the chords and played, the guitarist and the keyboard player stood/sat there like a numpty cos they didn't know the chords
jezzaboy
Why dont you download a program called Digital Music Mentor. You can download a trial version and then if you like it it costs around £25 if I remember right. It`s 90% right (most times!) and is very helpful. You can also use it on as many computers as you like. And don`t anyone start lecturing me about learning by ear, reading quavers/dots on a line and all that muso stuff. That`s great if you can do it but I prefer the cowboy way. Jez

xgsjx
I remember when I was a kid, before we had this tinterweb stuff, I'd go down to the local music shoppe and buy (that's paying money for goods) sheet music & books so I could learn a song if I couldn't pick the full bassline up by ear. Try chordie.com for the chords to a song if you can't pick it out by ear.

Surely being able to work something out by ear is one of the basic skills up there with being able to fret a string and get a clean note out of it? You don't need to be able to replicate every nuance of the recorded bass part after all the only person who's likely to notice will be another bass player, and they're not the people who you're trying to please. Besides since the bassline is the glue between the rhythm and the melody, playing exactly what's on the recording will only work if the rest of the band do that too. I've found that I always have to modify the basslines for my covers band to match the rest of the band's interpretation of the song.
iamapirate
+1 to that. I seem to know more than our drummer about the kick pattern 90% of the time - usually mucks the song up if you do the original!

Jez [/quote] For me it's a question of time - I can go by ear in a jam, but for gigs I at least like to know what the original was, so I have something to work around. Anything that shortcuts that process is good. I use Guitar Pro, but just downloaded the trial version of DMM and it looks like it makes a pretty good stab at the bass. Would at least be useful where there isn't a GP tab. However, it's actually £46, which was a bit more of a sharp intake of breath than £25 would be. jezzaboy
Regarding the £25 I mentioned, I downloaded it about 3 years ago and I agree £46 does seem a lot. Right, I off to Hull.... Jez
