welcome to BassChat! there a ton of threads on buying a first bass on here. Check out this page. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=16

FYI, active basses are generally more expensive than their passive equivalents and, unless you are making great strides in your music (eg, in a regular gigging, recording band) you will find a passive bass is probably sufficient for your needs. Passive was good enough for most of the greats (Jamerson, Butler, Harris, Pastorius, Burnel, etc etc) so I reckon its good enough for most players!

Why does no one question the amount being spent on a first bass when it's a Fender in question?

(I don't mean you Clarky, I've just noticed it in general - and on other forums as well)

Although the OP didn't actually state that it is his first bass.

Bro if you can play before you buy..this is soooo important...you really need to hear a bass before you buy.. this will pay off in the long run..i have made educated guesses on basses but not always been right..

As someone states above, the cost of fenders is a topical debate, but I must state I am very happy with a MIM P bass I brought new this year

I knew there where other basses around and under the same mark, that would do the same job, but I did get exactly what I wanted (including the colour and fret board), which I could not find 2nd hand

So I would say, it may be a a little over priced, I am also sure there will be many who answer your question with yes a ______ bass is better, but if it really what you want, I am sure you will still be happy with it in a years time

Sorry if my earlier post came across the wrong way. Like I said, I wasn't referring to anyone on here, it was mainly on another forum that seems to worship Fenders. I don't have anything against Fenders and I really didn't mean to offend anyone.

I'm surprised. This sort of Q usually provokes a slew of A's. Myself I'd have to ask, well - better for what (purpose / sound / image)?

My (off-topic) recommendation to Slinks is that before he hands over £527 to the lovely people at GAK, he checks out the for sale section here on BC.
