Golchen
"Hi Horse, why the long face?" Sorry bout that .............. I really enjoyed the clip, lovely singing. Well done for being on TV! Also solves the 'Michelle McManus - where is she now?' question.
cheddatom
It is really strange hearing the double bass from the listeners perspective, as it always sounds different from when I am actually playing it. Presumably being behind/above the instrument considerably affects the tone and volume, as I always perceive it as fairly thin and a bit quiet.
It might be worth trying some IEMs.

IEM's for amplified gigs is something I've been thinking about though, do you have any experience of the various systems? Jennifer

Balcro
Why does she call herself Horse! She may well have been given the nickname by an ex-partner. Could be seen as an inverted jokey compliment. Hoarse she isn't. Otherwise, it sounds like too much self deprecation and it gets in the way of her talent. Super voice with character, deserving of a wider audience. Balcro. Edited October 10, 2009 by Balcro

She has a back catalogue of eight albums and a strong cult following, and some almost top 40 hits, but I think her songwriting and voice has a far wider appeal. We'll be doing some big shows and a significant tour in Janurary/February next year, so hopefully that will help bring the music to more people. There's a bit more about Horse on her website here; http://www.randan.org/ and on her myspace; http://www.myspace.com/horserandan There is some great bass playing on her back catalogue - I'm told that Graham Brierton, the bass player on the first Horse album, was the first to bring slap bass to Glasgow :-) Jennifer

MacDaddy
I remember her from back in the day, didn't she have to call herself 'Horse UK' because of a band from USA? BTW you make it look so easy playing the DB, but having had a lesson at the SE Bash - I know it isn't! I think the USA band are known as "Horse The Band", or similar :-) BTW we're playing Brighton Komedia tomorrow (Thursday) so if there are any folks from Brighton reading this please pop along! mike257
I'd always wondered why they had 'The Band' stuck on the end. Things you learn on Basschat, eh!
xilddx
Sorry, just got around to watching this, she's got a great voice, lovely song and of course lovey string bass I like the tone, rich and BIG.
munkonthehill
I know this is an old thread,,,,,,but guess who I seen on the telly again this afternoon......hopefully Jen can stick a link up if I cant find one of her playing the DB with horse. Again though its a fantastic bit of playing by Jen aned Co, I only had one real concern though,,,,,,,,,no smiles or laughs!!!!!!!! and I know Jen has a lovely smile;) Oh thats how rumours start hahahahaha
endorka
Well, since you asked... The following link contains the interview with Horse, then the band starts at around 6:40 . http://video.stv.tv/bc/catchup-ac2-thehour...-20101013-1725/ The lack of smiles - ah yes. That happens when I concentrate. And believe me, when playing double bass on telly with no opportunity for overdubs, I was concentrating! I've been getting pelters about this from everyone who who has seen it. Perhaps a wee smile at the end wouldn't have been too difficult after all :-) Jennifer
KevB
Wouldn't worry about it, first rule of live bands backing a known front artist - *no one* is looking at the bass player

flyfisher
I noticed the video director cut to a great shot at 20s. Nice camerawork. Sums up the bassist's lot in life really. Still, they got the hang of it later on Great stuff though - wish I could aspire to something similar.
