It is really strange hearing the double bass from the listeners perspective, as it always sounds different from when I am actually playing it. Presumably being behind/above the instrument considerably affects the tone and volume, as I always perceive it as fairly thin and a bit quiet.
It might be worth trying some IEMs.

They're probably not appropriate for acoustic situations such as the one in that video, and especially in the orchestra; it's not really a problem when everything is acoustic and relatively quiet, as you can hear yourself well enough to play in tune, and it's best to keep things simple - you just have to compensate for the different sound behind and in front of the instrument. IEM's for amplified gigs is something I've been thinking about though, do you have any experience of the various systems?

No, I know nothing about them, I just thought it was a shame that you couldn't hear your true tone on stage and perhaps IEMs would solve it.

Why does she call herself Horse!

She may well have been given the nickname by an ex-partner. Could be seen as an inverted jokey compliment. Hoarse she isn't.
Otherwise, it sounds like too much self deprecation and it gets in the way of her talent. Super voice with character, deserving of a wider audience.

Indeed. She has a back catalogue of eight albums and a strong cult following, and some almost top 40 hits, but I think her songwriting and voice has a far wider appeal. We'll be doing some big shows and a significant tour in Janurary/February next year, so hopefully that will help bring the music to more people.

There's a bit more about Horse on her website here;

and on her myspace;

There is some great bass playing on her back catalogue - I'm told that Graham Brierton, the bass player on the first Horse album, was the first to bring slap bass to Glasgow :-)

Looks like you're gonna get some stable work out it.

I remember her from back in the day, didn't she have to call herself 'Horse UK' because of a band from USA?

BTW you make it look so easy playing the DB, but having had a lesson at the SE Bash - I know it isn't!

From what I gather, Horse had been going for quite some time prior to the inception of the band from the USA, and so were able to use the name unqualified. I think the USA band are known as "Horse The Band", or similar :-)

BTW we're playing Brighton Komedia tomorrow (Thursday) so if there are any folks from Brighton reading this please pop along!

Well, since you asked...

The following link contains the interview with Horse, then the band starts at around 6:40 .

The lack of smiles - ah yes. That happens when I concentrate. And believe me, when playing double bass on telly with no opportunity for overdubs, I was concentrating!

I've been getting pelters about this from everyone who who has seen it. Perhaps a wee smile at the end wouldn't have been too difficult after all :-)

There is now a direct link to the band playing on "The Hour":

We're touring just now and it's been a great buzz - Brighton, Inverness, Livingston this week, and Glasgow City Hall the next. Tour dates in my sig :-)
