Definitely not the answer.... you probably won't enjoy Her Majesty's nick Barlinnie at all :)

Many thanks for the time and info guys. If you search Cort on the gumtree listing you can still see "2x 5 string basses" listed, think that little picture is the one i took!

His guitarist said he had just moved into a flat on southside as well

Just to say thanks for all the digging around and advice, it's much appreciated. I do;t want any BCers getting into any trouble over a thief and £173, it's not worth an assault charge. However i am going to follow this up, the small claims looks like a great option and not costly (which i assume he'd be liable for anyway)

Cheers again
Steve
Don't know why anyone would expect the Police to be interested, or even able to do anything if they were. Despite the negativity above, they've got better things to do and, anyway, can only act when a law's been broken, which - technically - it hasn't.
Agreed. An awful situation but this is a civil transaction that has gone wrong and not criminal law. Going around and threatening him is criminal law. Sad but true. Your main option is a civil claim.

A shame as the vast majority of transactions on this site go very smoothly indeed. Use paypal or meet face to face at agree locations people.

Good luck sorting it out.

I know it's not a funny situation, but you gotta laugh at that idea. That would be the greatest counter-scam yet :)

I wasn't advocating any physical violence or criminal activity. Just a 'friendly' escorting to the nearest cashpoint to make the thieving git pay his dues!
A while ago i sold a bass to a forum member called jamiejames. The bank transfer was agreed and i arranged for the bass to be shipped on the same day, bass was collected but no money turned up
Sorry to hear this; I hope you can get a suitable result.

The sad thing is, when I bought my Stingray from Steve I sent him a message saying 'let me know when the cheque clears and I'll arange shipping' to which he replied ' don't want you to wait for your new bass send me your address and I'll get it packed up for collection' I thought it was a really nice gesture and I doubt he will do that again because of this theif.

If it's any help I once took a successful small claim through the Sheriff Court and it's easy and cheap and the courts service really tries to help you - the whole process is designed for people who are not lawyers.
I have no legal training or anything, and even I managed it.
It will all depend on what you have documenting the transaction, but as you seem to have quite a lot of that it should be fine. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Find out when they're playing next. Go to gig. Take his bass (if he leaves it on stage)...and say you are keeping it until the money is returned to you. Technically not theft.

You could pay him a visit. Sometimes people pants it when you confront them face to face. This happened once when some joker thought they could rip me off for a guitar I'd paid for.

It's a bit different when it's a true regular like yourself, i think most folk on here know you're not the sort who'd do that.

I think part of the reason i trusted him was because he was a 50-60 year old guy who was giving up quite a lot of information about himself. Spending an hour in the internet playing detective unearths a ton of information about the guy, he's not exactly kept himself quiet and is easy to identify from the pictures, which link him from the forum to his band. He even used the same name on his facebook account

Plus the 'Ray wasn't my bass :)

Also, could somebody on here (pref a mod to keep things formal) take a screenshot of his profile page, in case he logs on and removes the photo?
Thanks

Ouch I feel your pain.

I'm hoping that you can apply enough pressure by this sort of thing i.e. the forum, MySpace etc for him to come up with the money and claim it was a 'misunderstanding'.

You need to give the guy an 'out' if you can.

I understand the police stance even though it is frustrating. It's a civil matter not a criminal one and if the police get involved where they have no right to the brown stuff can really hit the fan for the officers involved. Believe me I know this :)

Here's hoping you get some satisfaction. If not as Chris said you must move on and put it down to experience. Civil action is the way to go if it proves cost effective. I know from other people chatting about you that you are a decent bloke and I'd love to meet you. You have been shafted by someone without your honesty and integrity. Know that and you are the winner, there are more important things than money.

Don't get me wrong I'd be livid. Most people are decent and honest though I know that.

Peter

That's great!

EDIT I'd like to keep things civil between his band members and myself as i've been doing a bit of friendly digging. Still made me chuckle though!

Cheers bud, i know that if i was a little bit more careful then i wouldn't be in this situation. It's just a shame that such a top forum with some truly sorted members has to be spoiled, albeit briefly.

I think a letter then small claims is the way forward
