jamman
I know this could be down to personal preference but, im looking for a new bass..... i'm in a band that play indie guitar bassed music. At the moment ive got a yamaha rbx paid about 200 notes for it, but now lookin to change. Just don't know what to get not well up on me basses. Ideally would love to get a ricky but just cant afford it £ 500 is the most i can afford, is there another bass which will give me a similar kind of sound ?? and still look good ?. The sound i'm after is treble with a punch without losing the bass notes. At the moment im playin through a laney amp. I know this post could leave me open to a bit of ridicule, but if you don't ask you never know !!! cheers in advance of replies what ever they may be . kingforaday
rickenbacker sound on a budget? hmmm; Peavey T-40! can't say i've ever actually played a rickenbacker but i've seen numerous references to people being able to get that sort of sound out of one of these. or if its the rick look you want maybe a japcrap (tokai etc) copy? certainly look the part no idea on the sound though good luck with your search
bh2
You wont go wrong with a Fender Precision or Jazz... you should be able to pick a used one for that sort of sponding. I got a Mexican example off the bay for £250 and it turned out to be a very nice bass indeed.
Rayman
Nice Fender Jazz, that's what you need.
Cat Burrito
I was going to say a Fender Jazz has sufficient Indie cred and is similar in vibe to a Rickenbacker (to a point). In Swindon there are loads of Rickenfakkers for £499 which bar the logo look indentical to my eyes. One of those two would be my option if I was you. lojo
As others have said, a Jazz bass would give you alot, I sold one this year, and now seek to replace it Alot of indie bands I have seen since the early 90s have used jazz basses, and get some great bright punchy tones There are also alot of indie type bands using P basses (a the risk of being disagreed with, the Cribs bass player uses a P bass to great effect, very simple lines) I have recently brought a Ric, I love it, its special, but If I were just to have one bass only, it would'nt be a Ric
The Burpster
A Jazz with a pre amp would be my recommendation too....

retroman
Don't forget to check out the Squier versions! Myself, and a few others have recently been very impressed with the Squier Jazz bass, and the Classic Vibe model is getting rave reviews. One of these would be well within budget, and as above, you could always retrofit it with a pre-amp, and if you want to look the part, fit a Fender headstock decal
NickH
Slap some SD Hot Stack for Jazz pup's in there. Coil tap 'em as they sound great in both HB and SC mode IMO. Or, install the patented NickH 3-Way Rotary Parallel - Series - Singlecoil Switch. Opened a ton of bassist's eyes putting this in their bass. Costs about a fiver and is a piece of piss to do. PM me for circuit.
Mr Fudge
Get a nice Fender Jazz Jap re-issue. Best value for money IMO
xgsjx
Depending on how much you're spending on the bass, it might be a good time to look at upgrading your amp/cab/combo if you're happy to pay instalments (Depending on what Laney you have tho).
