Tait
hi, does anyone know the name of les claypool's band? my bass teacher told me an album thats got some great bass playing on it and suggested buying it, so also could you name some albums by the band to see if any ring a bell. thanks
GreeneKing
Err that'd be Primus. For easy entry into their music I'd personally recomment 'Frizzle Fry'. Great stuff.
bnt
The main one is Primus e.g. Sailing The Seas Of Cheese, but he also has various side projects. If you can find the Sausage album Riddles Are Abound Tonight, jump on it - it was kind of a reunion of the original Primus, stripped down to basics and all the better for it IMHO. jmesa
The Sausage album is probably my fave Claypool release ever. The bass sounds / lines are mental.
ped
He could mean Primus, Sausage, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains (C2B3), Oysterhead, or his self titled efforts such as 'Holy Mackrel'. Type his name in at Amazon and you will see most of them.
low note lee
There is Primus, Les Claypool and the Holy Mack, and Les Claypool's Frog Brigade, and i'm sure there are more
ped
Ah yes I forgot the Frog Brigade - their full album version of Pink Floyd's 'Animals' was excellent!
Bass_In_Yer_Face
I just heard 'Tommy The Cat' recently....totally amazing bass playing but weird as hell. I do love 'one better' by Les Claypool on his ownsome. Try this link Les Claypool Primus are a bit too leftfield for me but for me Les Claypool has to be up there at the top of tree Edited September 29, 2007 by Bass_In_Yer_Face
thumbo
Sailing the seas of cheese got me into primus and is the reason I started playing bass. So on that note, I recommend buying that album.
Tait
yeah, primus is the band i was thinking of. none of those albums ring a bell, though. are there any with normal names?
GreeneKing
Amazon is your place to go to refresh your memory, as previously suggested. A very useful resource imo even if your not buying. Peter

It is not UK so probably not very good for buying, but there is always a wealth on information on the albums on there, including who played what. I find it very useful when you buy a CD which doesn't say in the sleeve! Mickeyboro
I have a new (still sealed) Fancy DVD by Les which I'd be happy to let go for £5 plus 50p postage....anyone interested?
bassninja
There's a superb cover of King Crimson's 'Thela Hun Ginjeet' by the Frog Brigade with a great bass solo at the beginning of the 2002 Bonnaroo DVD. No joy from YouTube as far as I can see though.

Huw
I love Les. Primus are awesome, but even I find some of the albums a little hit and miss. That said, I hated The Brown Album the first time I heard it but I love it, now. I really recommend the Oysterhead album he did with Stewart Copeland and Trey Anastasio, though. It's one of my favourite albums ever. Trey's voice on the first track sounds like Winnie the Pooh, as an extra bonus. cheddatom
I like most of Les' work. There are some tracks that i'll skip, but they tend to change each time I listen to each album. I really like oysterhead. Something interesting I found with Primus was that I loved their original (not first, unusual) sound on the Brown album etc. Then Antipop seemed miles away from that, sound wise, but I loved that sound too! I thought it sounded quite commercial and thought they should have gone for more exposure for Antipop, but I guess that would have been rather ironic! alexclaber
I love the weirdness of Seas Of Cheese and the unique rawk of Antipop. I have The Brown Album and Frizzle Fry but I haven't got into them yet - the latter is particularly annoying on the guitar front... Les Claypool's singing gives me hope!
