bassatnight
Gents and Ladies, I have recently purchased a US Fender Standard Jazz which although is lovely and mostly in excellent condition there seems to be a problem with the pick up poles beneth the E string, when I play through an amp with the volume at a nice high level the E string seems to be much lower in sound and tone compared to the other three strings. Anyone come accross a fault like this before? The bass is only a year and a half old. Any obvious checks on the pup I can do? Cheers, Steve. BOD2
Try another E-string before you do anything else. It's not uncommon for problems on one string only to be caused by a bad string.
mrcrow
are the pups tilted...a bit down on the E side regarding trying another string...good idea..sometimes its the simplest solution which is the right one...

mrcrow
They are a little tilted.
on a jazz there isnt much scope for tilting as you can on a P imho best leave the pups level..to begin with...see setting pup heights below that is why some pups have longer poles in the centre 2 on a 4 string set your pup heights to regulation and take it from there from the underside of the string to the top of the E side...1/8 G side ...a small amount closer with the strings fretted at the last fret this will give a slight tilt depending on your action hope this helps also take off the E string and give it a bit of a coil up and uncoil a few times... replace exactly as you had it...dont let it be twisted when tensioning Edited October 13, 2009 by mrcrow
