This is Kim Clarke with 80s funk/rock outfit Defunkt. She now seems to play gospel upright, but she was probably the first ever funkiest female player.

I remember seeing her on TV back in the 80s (I think it was the Whistle Test) & her playing totally blew me away. When I saw her she was playing a Stingray & was getting an incredible sound out of it.

For those of you with Spotify, here she is making a somewhat pedestrian track by Joshua Redman, groove! I love the way she pulls the beat.

Marvellous stuff, but for me, Tina Weymouth was the first female funk/pop bass player I knew about in the late 70s. Not many peoples Idea of true funk of course, but Talking Heads were sooooo funky, and Tina & Chris (Frantz) drove them along with some very simple but effective grooves. In fact it was listening to Tina that made me realize that simple basslines, with lots of space, can be much more powerful than a lot of twidly fiddly stuff.

Kim Clarke is amazing. Check out Defunkt's Thermonuclear Sweat and In America. Saw them live a few times in late 80s / early 90s.

Note that Defunkt and Meshell sometimes use the same pool of musicians, e.g. Ronnie Drayton, etc
