What are the signs? Audible or visual
if it starts to squeel when you tap it or flashes, then thats a sign its on its way out. pre amp valves can last a very long time, i've got some in my beck amp that've been going near on 60 years! skankdelvar
If you even suspect it's on the way out, go buy a new one. We're only talking a tenner or so for a decent 12AX7. Depending what it's function is in your amp, you can also take the opportunity to try one with different characteristics.
