john_the_bass
It's not strap porn as such, but what sort of strap do you use - have we done this before? I'm sure we probably have but I would like a new strap. Probably a leather one but I'm open to suggestions if I see something I like. I've been across the interweb and I've seen a couple that take my fancy, but you never know, you might have one I like, in which case I'll go "oooh i likes that where did you get it?" and harass you until you tell me. I like the Eldorado ones that Noel Gallagher uses, but they're about £150 each..... Anyway, I'll start you off - 3 of the 4 I use regularly - my band is 27brigade hence the one in the middle and the two sort of military style ones, the purchase of which influenced by the name of the band. Ou7shined
I've been using a 2" wide, clear plastic one for that last 5-6 years. I like that it looks invisible even though it is just a tad too short for my liking. It offers no comfort whatsoever but it is cool, so hey. In all the time I've been using it I can't recall anyone ever mentioning it until a couple of weeks ago I got a heckler who felt the need to share with us all how "gay" he thought it was as I put it on at the start of our set. It's actually approaching the end of it's useful life now as the pressure point (where the thin bit loops into the thick bit) has started to tear and you can see layers of plastic where it was once solid but I can't seem to find a new one and putting "clear strap" into an eBay search comes up with lots of new fangled lady-bump-baskets. pete.young
I like the neoprene Custom Strapp . If you're into personalisation, the guys behind this enterprise http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Custom-made-embroide...1QQcmdZViewItem are good friends of mine, and I can vouch for them and the very high quality work they do. Bilbo
Mine broke last night. After 20 years holding my fretless Wal, the bloody strap has broken (no damage to the bass, tho'). I think a new guitar strap is like a new leather jacket - too, well, 'new'!!

Have you really not been able to find new ones?! I seem to see them all the time in Gamlins, Cardiff (not that that's any help to you...) but I can't find 'em online at all Anyway, having been given an appropriate excuse to take a pic, here are all of mine! Cheap flamey one, acoustic one, better flamey one, metal spikey one, awesome cool one, brown leather one, Egyptian one (can't really see the design on that too well, sadly )
Hahaha! The awesome cool one is indeed comfy - part of the reason I described it so - the metal spikey one is also surprisingly comfy, except when you accidentally put it on backwards with your heaviest bass (I have it on my 7-string, which is definitely the most "metal" of all my basses) attached and all the spikes dig into your back... I've also caught my hair in the spikes many times, but that risk goes along with tuning pegs, strings and stuff... I was in Gamlins on Saturday and had a look out for clear straps but it seems they don't have them any more
Bilbo
Gamlin's is such a great shop (I bought a GK112MB combo there (the one that was nicked) and an Admaus six string there is the past - tried my first 5-string Wal there as well - didn't have the money then!). Happy days! I recall a friend bought a Peavy Palladium there as well, nice starter bass. Jon Caulfield, the Cardiff bass teacher, used to work there too. Gear heaven! 99ster
I've just got an Eldorado strap - a 'Vintage' style one: http://www.eldoradostraps.com/products2.htm and it is absolutely fantastic. Hand-made from really high-quality leather, with a sheepskin shoulder pad - it looks like it will outlive me it's so well made!!! It cost me $98 USD (incl. shipping) & took a week to arrive. So that's less than £50 at the current exchange rate. It came really well packed, with great email comms - direct with the guy that runs the company. Highly recommended! HarryPotter
Right guys, finally spoken to my friend last night about the straps John_the_bass - strap to your spec would be £40 or less (depends upon the cost of the buckle) plus a few £ for P&P. Lead time would be about 3 weeks from you saying yes. He can do black or the saddle leather colour (kind of a dark tan). Odub, a strap to your spec would be £35 (= a few £ P&P) lead time and colour options as per john_the_bass above. If you want to go for it then let me know. Cheers. Soulfinger
I use Planet Waves straps - one leather and one nylon, extra wide. Both are really comfortable. The rawhide inside of the leather strap helps with neck dive, but the nylon strap works just as well with my Fenders. 4001bass
Bought a 3mm thick black waxy saddle leather hide from fleabay for about £45 delivered and cut 7 straps varying from 2-3.5 inch wide out of it. Now the whole band have shiny new custom cut straps for a princely sum of £7 each. What's more I have enough off cuts to make one or 2 more for my next GAS attack. Bargain! bnt
On my old Hohner, I've had a red 3" DiMarzio ClipLock for the last 15 years, similar to this: I should get a couple more, I think - boring, but comfy, and won't come off by accident.
