lee4
I,ve seen a few pictures of a Fender P'bass Big Block. Has anyone bought or tried one?
OutToPlayJazz
I'vde almost ordered one of those several times. Love the look of it - If you go to the Fender.fr website and look under the videos tab, there's a French guy called Ludo playing one in a video. Sounds a lovely bass. Still tempted, but never seen one in the UK yet or had the chance to try one

bass_ferret
Looks good. What is it - MIA, MIM, CIJ? Looks like a Fender go at a Lakland Duck Dunn with Darkstar!

Trying to vintage it up a bit Fender style with a tele plate and blocks. I don't think it's hip to be square. The first thing that springs to mind when I think of Precision is the tail. DanOwens
I played one in Liverpool not long ago at the Dolphin shop. The set up was god-awful (which surprised me as they're usually pretty good), but they tweaked it there and then and I was pleasantly surprised (Also tempted to throw a DarkStar in there too!!!!) Delberthot
I know what you mean about the tight strings. My Japanese '51 reissue came with strings that felt the same way but I changed them immediately to my regular brand. The code begins 013 which I believe makes it a Mexican made model. It does look really mean, I've been tempted a few times but I have heard quite a few bad reviews about them so wouldn't want to try one without having a shot first. Deep Thought
I was initially attracted to it (as I am with most things black/maple) but I read a terrible review somewhere and lost interest really. Realised that as usual I was compromising instead of having the patience to save up for what I really wanted, a US P-bass, which I subsequently got. rodl2005
I tried one of these this morning actually! Yep they're made in Mexico & yep -this one at least- was pretty cr@ppy!!!! I was there A/B ing a Fender Jaguar & a USA Jazz S1 switching....The Jag. IMHO won this one. So I thought I'd try out a cuppla others while I was there & had the time. Tried as well as the Jag & MIA jazz, the Precision Big Block & the new vintage Mod. Squier Jazz fretless. The Squier fretless jazz was(all IMHO) far better than the Big Block P!!!! The BIG BLOCK's stacked tone control was at an angle-like someone had knocked it -HARD!!! But no-one had-according to the salesman-who I know personally & he wouldn't B*llsh!t me!!!- it was just LIKE that!!!!! :-( The set up was OK- they'd done it 'in-store'- but it still wasn't "nice" to play & the sound was "uninspiring"-to t\say the least! The tone controls didn't do a lot- not a lotta treble on hand, & not very bassy either...& I know passive basses-had 'em all my life & still do, but this was pretty dull. Not that PUNCHY either-for a big mutha of a humbucker!!! As I said the Squier VM fretless was a FAR better instrument & was 1/3 the price!! I thought the Squier was not far from the USA S1 Jazz!!!!! But I liked the Jaguar best-closely followed by the MIA S1Jazz, then the Squier VM Fretless.....then a LONG way down to the Big Block Precision! Thats MY 2c worth anyway! Tait
i always wanted a bass like that- black, black headstock, no scratchplate- but with just a split pickup like a normal p bass
bass_ferret
Sorry - best I can do. I'm sure Bernie will make you one with a P pickup if you want one. Edited October 5, 2007 by bass_ferret
Bernmeister
I've played one of these, they have one in my local pmt store & imho i really like them, they're very light in weight, it has a slim jazz type neck as well as a very slim body which makes feel closer to your body gives the overall impression that its very fast to play & has a general good feel about it. Anyway i've never being a seymour duncan pickup person but i was impressed with the pickups & the pre-amp built into this, for me the only letdown is the bridge, which felt a bit flimsy & wouldn't keep the bass in tune on a long gig for too many songs. So for me that would be the first thing that i would look to replace. I loved the colouring on this bass, which reminded me of my jazz bass special i used to have in the late eighties, but looking at the paint job closely doesn't seem as good, so i think this bass would quickly get mojo'd within a short space of time if used regularly. I've always wondered what a p-bass body & jazz the pickups combination would sound like & did consider customising one of my squire p-basses to make it like this. So my overall impression was very good ^_^ , if for only the retail price which is around the £600-700 mark but i'm sure you'll see cheaper online, but its slightly more than i'm prepared to pay right now, otherwise i would probably be the proud owner of one. LukeFRC
how on earth does the sturdiness of the the bridge effect tuning over a gig??? :S

stingrayfan
I really fancy one of these but £5/600's a lot for a MIM bass. I think they've missed a trick with this model. If they'd have made it as a premium American (or even CIJ) bass, and got some decent artist endorsement behind it, I think it would have been a good seller. Bassassin
Does it absolutely have to say "Fender" on it? If not: http://www.ariaguitars.com/int/03_products..._stb_exo_4.html http://www.ariaguitars.com/int/03_products...b_stb_gt_4.html Jon.
