neepheid Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 I've been bothered by an annoying rattle on the open E string of my OLP MM3. The rattle can be stopped by applying pressure on the string above the nut. I'm also rather perturbed by the fact that I can move the string out of the nut slot by hand even when it's correctly tuned and therefore under tension. Never been able to do that so easily before. What is likely to be the problem? Nut too low? Nut slot not filed correctly? Should I just fit a new nut? If so, what kind do people prefer around here? Quote
BOD2 Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Don't have any specific answers but here's some more info NUTS ! Hopefully someone who's had a similar problem previously will respond soon. Mr. Foxen Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 Wind your string further down the tuning peg, so the break angle is greater. Quote
The Burpster Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 ^^^ Nice one...... was just about to suggest that ! Quote
neepheid Posted October 7, 2007 Author Posted October 7, 2007 Managed to eke out a further half turn out of the existing string, and it's helped a little but it hasn't eliminated it. It's quite far down now Quote
King Tut Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Try sticking on a new E string - and leaving more string to wind on the post - so it goes right down. I've got an MM5 - superb bass for the dosh if you pick a good un! Quote
neepheid Posted January 10, 2008 Author Posted January 10, 2008 Sorted it: That enough break angle for you, Mr. OLP MM3? Open string rattles eliminated. Yes, it does seem odd, but the screws weren't quite far enough apart to go to the outside of the 4 strings it's holding down. Didn't want the strings scraping past the screw threads. However, it's not so bad because visually it's in the middle of all the strings. Hope it doesn't pop out under the strain... Quote
